INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH EDUCATION

an individual’s physical and mental well-being is

the concern of two similar areas of education:
health education and physical education. both
deal with habits of exercise, sleep, rest, and
recreation. since physical well-being is only one
aspect of a person’s overall health, physical
education is often thought of as a part of health
education.
▪ Health education is an activity aimed at the improvement
of health-related knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. It is
used in schools to help students make intelligent
decisions about health-related issues. There are many
ways to teach health in schools. Usually instructors
create and facilitate learning experiences that develop the
student’s decision-making skills. Above all, teachers
provide health information and a concern for factors that
influence the quality of life.
▪ Health behavior plays a major part in a person’s overall well-
being. Since health-related behaviors are both learned and
amenable to change, formal health education usually begins
when a child is most flexible—in primary school. This is also
when a child is more apt to accept positive health behaviors. It
is in these early years that the negative effects of a lifetime of
health abuse can be prevented. Many health problems are
known to be linked to smoking, poor nutrition, obesity, lack of
exercise, stress, and abuse of drugs and alcohol (see alcohol;
drugs; exercise; habit and addiction; stress; weight control).
▪ Basic to health education is the principle of preventive
care. Health educators attempt to teach people to be
responsible for their own health and health care. They
also discuss the benefits of medical technology and
research. They often promote behavioral changes and
modifications to improve health. (See also
holistic medicine.)
IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH EDUCATION
1. HEALTH EDUCATION BUILDS STUDENT'S  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND POSITIVE
ATTITUDES ABOUT HEALTH.
2. HEALTH EDUCATION TEACHES ABOUT PHYSICAL, MENTAL, EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL
HEALTH.
3. IT MOTIVATES STUDENTS TO IMPROVE AND MAINTAIN THEIR HEALTH, PREVENT
DISEASE, AND REDUCE RISKY BEHAVIOURS.
4. HEALTH EDUCATION HELP STUDENTS TO LEARN SKILLS SO THAT THEY WILL USE TO
MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES THROUGHOUT THEIR LIFETIME.
5. HEALTH EDUCATION IS VITAL FOR STUDENTS AS IT BUILDS THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND
ATTITUDES ABOUT HEALTH.

6. HEALTH EDUCATION DOES NOT ONLY CONCENTRATE ON BEING HEALTHY. IT ALSO

FOCUSES ON EMOTIONAL, MENTAL AND SOCIAL HEALTH TOO.

7. EDUCATING STUDENTS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH BUILDS THEIR

MOTIVATION. AS A RESULT, THEY STRIVE TO MAINTAIN GOOD HEALTH, PREVENT
DISEASES AND AVOID RISKY BEHAVIOUR.

8. INSTILLING THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD HEALTH IN SCHOOLS, HELPS STUDENTS TO

MAKE HEALTHY LIFE CHOICES WHEN THEY GROW OLDER AND CONTINUE DOING SO
THROUGHOUT THEIR LIVES.

9. IT HELPS THEM UNDERSTAND THE DANGERS OF USING ILLEGAL DRUGS, SMOKING

AND DRINKING ALCOHOL.

10. IT HELPS PREVENT VARIOUS INJURIES, DISEASES, SUCH AS, OBESITY AND DIABETES,
AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES. (STD)
4. Health education is important to teach children awareness about living
a healthy lifestyle. Health education encompasses social, mental, physical
and social health.

5. Health education teaches people of all ages about how diet and exercise
contribute to a healthy lifestyle. It also encourages positive changes in
behaviour and lowers the risk of addiction to drugs, alcohol and unsafe
sexual practices. The majority of schools around the country have courses
aimed at teaching health education to students. These courses often
revolve around the body, healthy eating, sex and exercising. Some
students are taught basic health and physical fitness early on. More in-
depth courses are designed for middle and high school students.

6. MANY ARE THE BLESSINGS OF IMPARTING HEALTH EDUCATION.
HEALTH EDUCATION ENABLES A PERSON TO REMAIN PHYSICALLY FIT
AND IN PROPER HEALTH.

7. A HEALTHY PERSON CAN ENJOY LIFE FULLY. HE CAN CARRY OUT HIS
DUTIES IN A RESPONSIBLE MANNER. HE IS AN ASSET TO THE FAMILY,
THE SOCIETY AND TO THE ENTIRE NATION. HE IS ALWAYS FULL OF
ENERGY. HE LIVES A LONG AND HAPPY LIFE. A HEALTHY PEASANT IS
HAPPIER THAN A MONARCH WITHOUT HEALTH.
8. Health education encourages a person to make healthy
choices. They are instructed to avoid unhealthy habits. ‘A sound
mind lives in a sound body’. Rabindranath Tagore and C.V.
Raman, if they were confined to sick bed, could not have won
the Nobel Prize. In fact, a sickly student with all his talents and
abilities lags behind in the race of life.
9. Health education also teaches about the emotional and mental
health of the student. A healthy person is the happiest person in
the world.
