Born on August 24, 1977, John Green grew up in Orlando,

Major Characters
1. Hazel Grace Lancaster
Hazel is one of the main protagonist character also the narrator in the story.
She is a young teen who has stage 4 thyroid cancer. She is a bookworm, she has a favorite book “An Imperial
Affliction” by Peter Van Houten. She also often spends a lot of time thinking about death, only to conclude that
oblivion is inevitable. It can be seen in the paragraph:
Late in the winter of my seventeenth year, my mother decided I was depressed, presumably because I rarely left the
house, spent quite a lot of time in bed, read the same book over and over, ate infrequently, and devoted quite a bit of my
abundant free time to thinking about death.

Despite pulling back from life, Hazel is caring, thoughtful, and brave. She is also has a good sense of outspoken
humor, as she doesn't talk about her illness in lurid, self-pitying at all; instead, she tackles it with a dose of humor:
I didn't tell him that the diagnosis came three months after I got my first period. Like: Congratulations! You're a
woman. Now die. (2.13)
2. Augustus Waters (Gus)

Augustus who is known as “Gus” in the novel is also the major and protagonist character in the story. Gus is a 17-year-
old boy who suffered from cancer and subsequently had a leg amputation and is optimistic guy who wants to be known
widely and have people remember him when he dies. It can be seen in the paragraph when Gus send voice over, from
his eulogy to Hazel:
Here’s the thing about Hazel: Almost everyone is obsessed with leaving a mark upon the world. Bequeathing a legacy.
Outlasting death. We all want to be remembered. I do, too. That’s what bothers me most, is being another
unremembered casualty in the ancient and inglorious war against disease. I want to leave a mark.

He is confident, charming, and caring. Gus is handsome and he knows it, but his signature charm is endearing rather
than arrogant. He is driven by his selflessness and empathy, especially when it comes to Hazel and Isaac. Gus is
honest and vulnerable, and never fails to say what’s on his mind. Ultimately, his deep love for Hazel helps him
understand that you don’t have to leave behind a legacy to live a meaningful, love-filled life.
3. Isaac 4. Peter Van Houten
Peter Van Houten is an alcoholic who owns
daughter died from cancer. He is the author of
Hazel's favorite book, An Imperial Affliction, and
the father of Anna Van Houten, the inspiration for
Isaac is another friend of Hazel and Gus's from Support Group his book. When Hazel and Augustus meet him in
who is described as being a long-faced, cool, skinny guy with person, he's rude, abrasive, and truly drunk. He
long blonde hair swept over one eye, and having rather large, says mean things to them and refuses to answer
thick glasses. He lost one eye to cancer, and loses another early Hazel's questions, effectively crushing her dreams
in the book. He and a girl named Monica seem to be passionately of learning what happens at the end of An Imperial
in love when the novel starts, but she dumps him shortly before Affliction.
he loses his second eye, which leads to great anger and sadness.
He's a true friend to both Hazel and Augustus, and seems like a
stand-up guy. Isaac teaches us about friendship. He is always
there for Augustus—up to the very end—just like Augustus was
there for him when he had the surgery that removes his eyes.
They really know how to stick together, just like friends should.
Minor Characters
1. Mr. & Mrs. Lancaster
They are loving and caring parents to Hazel Grace. Hazel describes her dad early on as easily
moved to tears (especially when it comes to her illness), and because of that, she often tiptoes
around him, trying not to upset him. But he's also extremely supportive and talks to Hazel like an
adult. Mrs. Lancaster is just how much she caters to Hazel. She wants to be there for her all the
time in an effort to make her life more fulfilling and fun:
My mom was really super into celebration maximization. (3.21)

2. Mr. & Mrs. Waters


They are quite understanding parents to Augustus,they always try to invest optimism to
his son by putting word of encouragement around her and talk a lot about heaven and
God's plan.
3. Lidewij Vliegenthart
She is Peter Van Houten's secretary and, apparently his caretaker. Lidewij is a dreamer and a
wish-granter. She is the one who arranges for Augustus and Hazel to come visit Van Houten

4. Patrick
He is the leader of the support group that Hazel, Gus, and Isaac attend. He is a survivor of
testicular cancer and uses his story and his time to attempt to inspire other young people to
continue fighting cancer and communicating about their progress and feelings with one
another.

5. Kaitlyn
She is the only of Hazel's friend and former schoolmate with whom she keeps in touch. She is
pretty, popular. Though they are friends, there is a clear distance between them.
6. Monica
She is Isaac's girlfriend until she dumps him, quitting all communication with him
just before his eye operation.

7. Dr. Maria
Hazel’s primary cancer doctor. She is a strong, assertive, yet empathetic physician. At one
point Hazel remarks that Dr. Maria is very into giving out hugs. She convinces Hazel’s
parents that Hazel should be allowed to travel to Amsterdam, despite their reservations., one
that Hazel especially likes for her honesty and care.

8. Caroline
Augustus’s former girlfriend, She died from brain cancer. Although Caroline does not appear in
the novel, Augustus tells Hazel about her.
Conclusion

This character study of The Fault in Our Stars novel has revealed how to
analyze characters in literary works. The readers could easily understand
personality trait of the characters in the story. It presents that any literary works
could be understood well through reading and analyzing the elements of a
novel, one of them is the character. By having reading young adult realistic
fiction like this novel, teaches the reader about the beauty of love and the
power of resistance in a world that keeps trying to limit our spirit. It also
teaches about the value of life, love and friendship.”
