Comments & Notes
Starting point is when CM layer entity tries to establish a connection with
the MS. There is two possibilities:

Connection already exists (there is another transaction ongoing). In

this case CM layer entity just makes connection to MMM individual,
according to rules concerning parallel transactions.

Connection does not exist. In this case Paging is needed.

In the following example the first case is described.

Note: Following description is simplification of the real function. The

call waiting/multi party call cases require more checks, and
more signalling between MSS and MMS what is described later
in this chapter.

1. CM layer entity tries to start transaction
Request for the connection towards MS. First it tries to page the subscriber
(PAGEREQ5 or PAGEREQ2 or PAGEREQ1). Signal
contains also information about access for which
the paging is done (GSM or UMTS).
MSMT

2. MPAG requests MTV to busy mark the record

1
for Paging (BUSYMARKMSUB/-ACK). In the
acknowledge signal there will be indication:
 Record busy marked
MPAG 2 MTV  Record already busy for Paging
 Record already busy for CM transaction (Reference to
MMM returned)

In this example the MTV record is busy for CM

transaction, therefore MMM pointer (and MMM
reference is returned)

3. MPAG returns result of Paging (PAGEREQ1R). (In
this example it is assumed that subscriber is busy
MSMT for any other transaction (a call, for example).
Paging is needed. Instead, MPAG forwards to
block MSMT MMM pointer in order to get MSMT
3
4 to link with MMM.

4. MSMT requests MMM to create a link towards

MPAG MMM the CM layer entity (SMSTLINK).

Note, that different CM layer entities are using

different signals for asking inlinking:
• CC: Permission for establishment of parallel transaction
(CHKPARATRANS/-ACK). After that request for
inlinking (CALLTOLINK2).
• In case of there is no CC connection yet, request is
accepted (CALLTOLINK1ACK).
• In case of Call Waiting (STARTCW) if allowed with
the ongoing call.
• SS (SSTLINK/-1R).
• LCS (LCSTLINK/-R).
• SMS (SMSTLINK/-1R).

5. MMM checks if BSC tracing should be considered
for the new transaction. MMM asks from MTV
MSMT MBRIA related information (TRACEINFOREQ/-R).

6. MMM initiates the BSC Recording functionaliyty

7
6 (BSCRECIMSI1). Recording is initiated only if IMSI
is marked as traceable in MBRIA.

MMM
Note that these two functions are mutually
excluding each other.

7. MMM informs that the inlinking was successful

(SMSTLINK1R). MMM provides information
MTV concerning the state of the mobile:
• Indication if the authentication has net been performed
• Indication if DTAP signalling is allowed or not
• Information about the Power Class of the mobile
Parallel transaction has been now successfully
established. New CM layer entity can proceed with
the signalling towards the mobile station.
