WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL WELLNESS?

• Environmental wellness is an awareness of the unstable state of the
earth and the effects of your daily habits on the physical environment.
• Environmental Wellness defined: the collective interactions of humans
with the environment, and the short-term and long-term health
consequences of those interactions.
• Environmental wellness is defined as occupying pleasant,
stimulating environments that support well-being.
• Environmental wellness is a process that involves learning about and contributing
to the health of the planet. This involves establishing a sustainable lifestyle,
protecting natural resources, and eliminating pollutants and excessive waste.
• Environmental wellness also includes having respect for and awareness of your
surroundings and playing an active role in your community.
• Environmental wellness encompasses not just our relationship with the planet
and nature but our relationship with our personal surroundings as well.  When
our personal surroundings are well cared for, clean and organized, we experience
a greater sense of comfort and less anxiety.  Being environmentally well enhances
your personal health and helps ensure the future health of our communities and
the world.
What are other signs of environmental wellness?
•Being aware of the impact of your decisions on the environment

•Working with your community to make improvements

•Caring for the environment by following the four R’s (reduce, re-use, re-think,
recycle)
•Being aware of risks in various settings (i.e. going out at night, travelling to
new places)
•Leading a lifestyle that is respectful of and in harmony with your
environment
•Recognizing the need to keep a healthy personal environment .
There are different environmental circumstances which
impact our health and wellness which include:

• Social environment – This is the fluid arena in which people interact

with individuals, groups and institutions through personal
interaction or electronically through social media, interactions which
are filtered through a lens of social norms.
• Built environment - This aspect involves how we set up the area we
live, study and socialize in.  This is often where we have the most
control.  Our home - whether an on-campus residence hall room or
an off-campus house or apartment - is ideally our retreat and respite
place.   It is where we can return to for relaxation and renewal.  In
that respect, it is important for us to make our living environment as
comfortable and conducive to our level of desired rest and enjoyment
as possible.  Consider decorating with your favorite colors and other
items that bring you happiness and/or help you rest.
• Natural environment – All around us are naturally occurring
living and inanimate elements that include air, water, earth,
plant life and wildlife. These elements interact organically to
form a series of ecosystems which impact the health and
wellness of all species on Earth.  Research continues to show
us that getting outside and experiencing nature if various
ways is an important and often essential component to our
wellbeing, especially as it relates to our physical and
emotional health.
A healthy personal environment includes:
•Surrounding yourself with people and things that you
find positive and inspiring
•Participating in your community

•Caring for personal belongings and maintaining

comfortable working and living spaces

.
Ways to enhance environmental wellness:
•Protect yourself and others from environmental hazards such as noise,
air and water pollution, second-hand smoke, ultraviolet radiation
•Walk or ride your bike (weather permitting) whenever possible

classmates

scrubbing the dishes

Goals for your Environmental Wellness

your needs

and climate
•Minimize your contribution to the destruction of the outdoor
environment
As a Student, in wellness we strive to create spaces where students feel safe,
supported, and included. In addition, we also recognize our own responsibility
for the quality of our air, our water, and the land that surrounds us. We
believe taking care of our campus and community environments is an
important contribution to the well-being of individuals and out broader
society.   Please join us in thinking about the conservation of energy, water,
and to the commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle whenever possible.
Enhance your environmental wellness by taking advantage of resources
offered around campus, joining a student organization, and in the
community.
