 Political maps show how people have
divided places on the Earth into countries,
states, cities and other units for the purpose
of governing them.
The World Physical
 Physical maps show what the surface of
the Earth looks like.

 The world has five major oceans.
 Atlantic
 Pacific
 Arctic
 Indian
 Southern
Global Climates
 Students generally associate Arctic and
Antarctic with cold weather, so students could
make the observation that the climate at the
poles is cold. This map shows the general
climate regions of the world.

 The purpose of a Political map is to show
borders of countries, states, cities
 The purpose of a Physical map is to show
what the surface of the world looks like
What are lines of latitude?
 Lines of latitude tell you how far North or
South of the Equator a place is.

 Lines of latitude always run around the earth.

What are lines of longitude?
 Lines of longitude tell you how far East or
West a place is from the Greenwich Meridian.

 Lines of longitude run from the North Pole to


the South Pole.
 
Longitude lines are called Meridians. The most important,
is the PRIME MERIDIAN. This is sometimes called the
GREENWICH   MERIDIAN, as it passes through

To find a place exactly, you need crossing lines that create an


intersection. This is a grid system. One grid system is used
by mapmakers all over the world. It helps you locate any
place on Earth. It is known as the latitude and longitude grid.
To give latitude and longitude
