imaginary lines
running from
east- west on
earth…….
Longitude are imaginary lines that run around
the Earth vertically (up and down) and meet at
the North and South Poles.
These lines are known as meridians.
Each meridian measures one degree of
longitude. The distance around the Earth
measures 360 degrees.
They are semicircles and the distance between
them decreases steadily polewards until it
becomes zero at the poles, where all the
meridians meet.
LATITUDES LONGITUDES
1. Latitudes are imaginary horizontal lines 1. Longitudes are imaginary vertical lines
running from east to west on earth. running from north to south on earth.
2. Latitudes are concentric circles and are 2. They are semicircles and the distance
parallel. between them decreases steadily pole
wards until it becomes zero at the poles,
where all the meridians meet.
3. Latitudes are of different length. Equator 3. Unlike parallels of latitude, all meridians
is the longest latitude. are of equal length.
4. Latitudes are also known as parallels. 4. Longitudes are also known as Meridians.
5. There are in total 181 latitudes. 5. There are in total 360 longitudes.
6. Latitudes divide earth into heat zones. 6. Longitudes divide earth into time zones.
