LATITUDES AND

LONGITUDES
INTRODUCTION
 TheEarth appears to be covered by many vertical and
horizontal imaginary lines across its surface.
 Theimaginary lines running horizontal from east to
west are called the lines of latitude.
 The line running vertically from the north to south are
called the lines of longitude.
Lines of Latitudes !!
 The lines of latitude circle the Earth in an east west
direction.
 The distance between the lines of latitude is always
same. They are also called parallels of latitude.
Facts about Latitude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Latitudes are measured in degrees.

 The 0˚ latitude is called the equator. It is the longest latitude.
 The lines of the latitude are shorter near the poles.
 Theequator divides the Earth into
two equal parts.

 Thepart of the Earth between the

North Pole and the equator is called
the Northern Hemisphere.

 The part of the Earth between the

South Pole and the equator is called
the Southern Hemisphere.
 The value of all latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere
are followed by letter “N”, which stands for north.
 Inthe Southern Hemisphere they are followed by letter
“S”, which stands for south.
 The equator is the 0˚ parallel and the poles are 90˚ N
and 90˚ S latitude.
Important lines of
Latitude…..
 Tropic of cancer - 23½˚ N
 Tropic of Capricorn - 23½˚ S
 Arctic Circle - 66 ½˚ N
 Antarctic Circle - 66 ½˚ S
Lines of Longitude !!!!!!
 It run from the north of the Earth to
the south.

 They divide the Earth into segments

like an orange.

 They are not parallel like the lines of

latitude, and meet at a point at the
north and south poles. They are called
as meridians.
Facts about Longitude!!!!
 Longitudes are measured in
degrees.
 All longitudes are equal in
length.
 The longitude that passes through
the Royal Observatory at
Greenwich in England is called
the Prime Meridian.
 Longitudes are drawn to the east and west of
the prime meridian.

 The prime meridian divides the Earth into

two equal halves, the Eastern Hemisphere
and the Western Hemisphere.

 Longitude of a place is followed by the

letter “E” for east and “W” for west.

 180˚ E and 180˚ W is the same longitude

and is called the “ International Date
Line”[IDL]
Locating Places!!!!!!!!!
 Latitudes and longitudes helps us to find out locations.
 Parallels and meridians crisscross to form a Grid.
 The point where the latitude and longitude of a place intersect
each other is the exact location of that place.
