In the system known as "Modern
Arnis," the block is made against the
opponent's weapon, a change from
the method of the classical masters.
The techniques are focused on
blocking the attack, grabbing the
opponent's stick by hand and then
either taking it away or controlling it.
Balintawak Arnis was originally designed as a defensive art. Obon,
WHAT IS the Grandmaster of APO-Balintawak Self-Defense System, said that
DEFENSE a Balintawak fighter would not make the first move and wait for the
opponent to attack first. Such is the confidence and superiority of
IN ARNIS? Balintawak when it comes to Escrima Self Defense.

Despite the different fighting philosophies found in different styles

of Arnis, most styles use the same basic set of blocks for the simple
reason that these are the areas of the body that the fighter must
defend if he wishes to avoid being struck. Standard blocking
techniques include a block to the inside, a block to the outside and a
"roof" (or overhead) block. There is also a figure-8 pattern, which
can have the effect of a block because a figure-8 strike will naturally
tend to intercept an incoming attack.
BLOCKING TECHNIQUES IN
ARNIS
• Blocking an attack to the left side Practitioners use this block to stop strikes
number 1, 3 and 6. This is where Arnis fighters aim to attack the left side of
the body. While keeping the left hand behind the stick, you should turn your
body inward while holding it vertically. The right foot should be kept forward
while maintaining the position of the right elbow close to the body.
• Blocking an attack to the right side In this block, the body is turned outward
while the right foot is pulled back to protect against strikes number 2, 4 and 7.
Again, it is very important to keep the elbow close to the body while keeping
your left hand behind the cane.
• Blocking an attack to the solar plexus or chest Strike number 5 is a serious one
that can cause serious damage to the fatal organs. Historically speaking,
fighters used strike 5 to kill their opponents in a glimpse of an eye.
