How to calculate number of lamps for a
room?
• The number of lamp can be calculated by using the following formula.

Where,
• N – is number of lamps

• E – is Illuminance in [LUX]

• A – is the area of the room

• F – is Luminous flux [in lumen]

• UF – is utilization factor of the lamp. Duet to absorption of light by walls, ceilings, floor, etc.

• MF – is maintenance factor due to aging and dusty space

How to calculate number of lamps for a
room?
Example:
Given: Area of a room = 5mx8m

E = 200Lux
UF = 0.7, MF = 0.8
Determine number of lamps require? And distribute the lamps with uniform illumination.
Solution:
Before determining the number of lamps, we first have to determine amount of
luminous flux required.

Assuming N = 1, F will be 14,285.7 lumen

How to calculate number of lamps for a room?
• Now to determine number of lamps, we have to select lamps based on the type and purpose of
room.

For example if we assume the room is used for office and select a Standard LED Bulb 9W.
How to calculate number of lamps for a room?
• Hence, the number of lamps can be calculated as

(14,285.7lm)/(806lm) = 17.72 ≈ 18 lamps

• Let assume the lamp is LED 24w with
E = 3500lm

• Now the number of lamps will be

(14,285.7lm)/(300lm) = 4.76 ≈ 5 lamps

How to calculate number of lamps for a room?
Exercise: Determine number of lamps for a 20mx50m store room. standard E = 50LUX.

use UF = MF = 0.8

Solution
= 78,125 lumen
Selecting a florecent lamp of ϕ = 5000lm
How to calculate number of lamps for a room?
• Hence, the number of lamps will be

(78,125 lm)/(5000lm) = 15.625 ≈ 16 lamps
