WHO
INVENTED
VOLLEYBALL?
 Name: William George Morgan
 Born: January 23, 1870; Lockport,
New York, U.S.
 Died: December 27, 1942 (Aged
72)

WHEN IT
STARTED &
HOW?
 The game of volleyball, originally called
“mintonette,” was invented in 1895 by William
G. Morgan after the invention of basketball only
four years before.
 Volleyball was called Mintonette because of its
similarity with badminton. However, Alfred
Halstead late renamed it to volleyball because
the objective of the game was to volley the ball
back and forth over a net.
 The game designed to be a combination of
basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball.
WHAT IS
VOLLEYBALL?
• The sport of volleyball originated in the United
States, and is now just beginning to achieve the
type of popularity in the U.S. that it has
received on a global basis, where it ranks
behind only soccer among participation sports.
 It was designed as an indoor sport for
businessmen who found the new game of
basketball too vigorous.
 The game soon proved to have wide appeal
for both sexes in schools, playgrounds, the
armed forces, and other organizations in the
United States, and it was subsequently
introduced to other countries.
THE BALL FOR
VOLLEYBALL
• They created a ball in 1900 consisting of three
layers. They started with a latex bladder made
from a material similar to that of a bicycle tire,
then, they added a second layer made of cloth
and covered the whole thing with a third and
final layer made of leather. With that, the first
ever volleyball was created.
MORGAN’S TIME PRESENT TIME
THE FIRST RULE
• called for a net 6 ft. 6 in (1.98 m) high

• a 25 ft. × 50 ft. (7.6 m × 15.2 m) court, and any number

of players.

• A match was composed of nine innings with three serves

for each team in each inning, and no limit to the number
of ball contacts for each team before sending the ball to
the opponents' court.
• In case of a serving error, a second try was allowed.

• Hitting the ball into the net was considered a foul (with
loss of the point or a side-out)—except in the case of
the first-try serve.
