Predicting

Basic Science Process Skills

annrubyablando
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
1. develop your predicting skills in Science;
2. differentiate the two (2) types of prediction;
3. give its importance
What is predicting?

Process which requires a person to tell what

might happen in the future
Example
At one time, we predict whether the day will be sunny or rainy as we look
up the sky before an activity.
Predicting
 Keen observations coupled with insights gained
from past experiences enable us to see what is
expected to occur at a certain time

en Inference and
Prediction
TWO WAYS OF MAKING PREDICTIONS

Interpolation
Extrapolation
Example
Mario obtained a very strong bar magnet and several
paper clips. He wanted to find out the number of paper
clips that will be attracted by the magnet if he changes the
distance between them.
He recorded his findings in the following table.

Distance Between No. of Clips

Magnet and Clips Attracted
(mm)
5 24
7 20
9 16
11 12
13 8
 State your observation regarding the number of paper clips
attracted as the distance between them is increased.
 Predict how many clips will be attracted at a distance of:
 6 mm
15 mm

17 mm
TWO WAYS OF MAKING PREDICTIONS
 The prediction made at 6 mm distance is a safe one. Why?
 Because it is based on the observation on the number of clips attracted at
5 mm and 7 mm distance.
When a prediction is made between observed data, we call
this interpolation.
TWO WAYS OF MAKING PREDICTIONS
 Are the forecasts made for a 15 mm and 17 mm distance safe or not? Why?
 Not safe. Because it is beyond the observed data and based only on the observation
made for the 13 mm distance.
When a prediction is made beyond observed data, we call
this extrapolation.
TWO WAYS OF MAKING PREDICTIONS
 Predictions are safe if we can control the variables that will
likely affect our prediction.
 Example:

1. Weather, Sunrise and Sunset

2. Increase in the population of animals
What is the Importance of Predicting?
When you develop this skill,
1. You will always be alert to see the turn of events around you.
2. You will be easily warned about possible dangers that lie
ahead.
COMMUNICATI
NG
Basic Science Process Skills
WHAT IS COMMUNICATING?

Process of systematic
reporting/sharing of data using
words or graphic symbols to
describe an action, object or event.
FORMS OF
COMMUNICATION
Verbal

-speaking to share information; listening to a person

to understand what he/she means
FORMS OF COMMUNICATION
Written

-using written words to communicate data;

reading to understand given data

IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION

1 2 3
1.To describe clearly, accurately 2.To efficiently and effectively give 3.To write a thorough report of
and completely what was and follow instructions research findings
observed during an investigation
