COLLABORATOR/S: Emergency hotlines

ESTIMATED PROJECT COST: Php 2,000 – Php 3,000

AREAS OF INTEREST: Security

DIRECT BENEFICIARY/COMMUNITY INTEREST: Kids and Parents

RATIONALE

As population increases, the use of emergency services increases too. Parents’ greatest

concerns are their child, especially regarding the safety of their child but it is not possible for

them to always stay beside their child all the time because most of them needs to work to earn
some money to sustain a family. That is why the researchers considered to create an app called

WatchApp, a tracking app that sends location to the end user at a consistently high frequency. It

offers real time updates, every an hour. This tracking device communicate their positions by

taking signals. This app can be used for safety and security purpose by tracking the location of

children’s, teenagers or loved ones. Child tracking system is extensively used around the world

to ensure parents that their wards are safe from dubious actions.

These days we cannot predict what will happen next to us in next seconds. Especially our

children who are not matured enough to take care of themselves. WatchApp is an app that is

connected to a watch wear by the child where parents are able to trace the activities of their

children and monitor its location to avoid child missing, kidnapping and etc. It is an application

at the parent side that will allow parents to send a location request to a child side then retrieved

the location from the request reply and shows it on the map. The communication between the

parent and child side can also be done using Short Message Service (SMS) where it will allow

the system to work without the need of internet connection. On the children’s side they are going

to wear a watch where it is connected to the app used by the parents. By the used of the watch

parents are able to send request to know their location.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to create an app that allow parents to keep in track of their kids when

they are out of their sight. Specifically, this study tends to answer these following questions:

1. What is the feasibility of the study “WatchApp: A Tracking App for Kids and Teenagers” in

terms of:
1.1. technical;

1.2. economical; and

1.3. operational?

2. What is the effectiveness of this location-tracking app in terms of:

2.1. functions of the system;

2.2. system design; and

2.3. tools and technology?

3. How reliable is the information given by the WatchApp in terms of:

3.1. data received;

3.2. application performance; and

3.3. navigation?

PROPOSED TECHNOLOGY/SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM

We propose a solution to solve the problem based mainly using the app used by

parents and watch used by the child which send SMS and consists of GPS devices.  The system

proposed is based on a simple idea that is the use of app for communicating between the parties

involved, parent and child. It is designed in a simple way so that it will involve few elements and

less user interaction. This way it will result in a system that is simple and easy to implement and

use, making it more user-friendly.

First is the parent side it is basically an app used by the parent of the child for tracking and

monitoring. The app on the parent’s side is used for communicating and receiving the alert

messages and location co-ordinates from child module and maps to view the location of the child

on a map. Thus, it requires telephony and internet services to be enabled in the parent’s phone

for the system to function.

The Second is the child side which acts as a client for the system. The child side uses watch

which send SMS and consist of GPS devices. The child side uses the watch which sends SMS for

communicating with the parent side and location services, GPS or Network, to get the location of

the child in form of coordinates.

On the parent side, there is an Android phone with the application for monitoring child location.

The App has a digital dashboard where graphic interface can be build according to requirements.

After creating required interface for tracking application on an Android App, child can be traced

continuously on the map. On the child side, the traceable watch consists of SMS and GPS

devices. The child side uses watch for communicating with the parent side and location services,

GPS or Network, to get the location of the child in form of coordinates such as longitude and

latitude. A parent will use the interface to track the location of child. WatchApp service runs in

the background continuously so that parent can see the child’s real time location at any time and

the child module keeps on sending the location coordinates i.e. latitude and longitude.

First, the application operates automatically as soon as child reaches to the pre-defined check

points without the need for user interaction at the child side. This is considered as a big

advantage for the system. Another advantage is that the system uses SMS for data transfer in
case there is no internet connectivity in a certain place. The third advantage this solution offers is

that it can perfectly function indoors as well.

NOVELTY/PATENTABILITY: Innovation of an existing

In all worlds, feeling safe about their children is the most important need for parents. Although

there is no substitute for quality childcare, which includes constant supervision. Yet, reality is that

constant child monitoring is not always possible, especially when a parent has to monitor multiple

children at once. Creating a tracking system for parents with multiple children could significantly reduce

their stress while also giving them more freedom during outings with their children. This paper's top

level view is divided into two distinct modules: child module and parent module. Each child has its own

child module. Its primary function is to receive messages on a regular basis. and, in response, send

messages to the parent module, informing them that the child is in danger. It also has a buzzer alarm

that sounds whenever the child is alarmed. This makes it easier for a parent to locate a troubled child.

The parent module sends requests to each child inquiring about their status. The parent module serves

as the system's computational brain. It is in charge of communicating with all of the children. as well as

calculating their distance It also examines incoming packets to determine whether or not a child is in an

alarmed state. Finally, if any of the children stops sending packets, the parent assumes they are out of

range and sets off an alarm. When the parent module cycles through all the children, it saves the status

of each child and displays it on the LCD.
