PROBLEMS ON DIODE WITH RC LOAD
Problem 1: A diode circuit as shown in Figure 1 below has
R = 44 Ω and C = 0.1 μF. The capacitor has an initial
voltage Vc0 = Vo (t=0) = 220 V. If switch S1 is closed at t = 0,
determine (a) the peak diode current (b) the energy
dissipated in the resistor R, and (c) the capacitor voltage
at t = 2 μs.
4
DIODE WITH LC LOAD
In Figure 2, when switch S1 is closed at t=0, the charging
current of the capacitor can be expressed as
................. (1)
5
DIODE WITH LC LOAD (CONTD..)
With an initial condition i(t=0)=0 and Vc(t=0)=0, the
capacitor current i(t) can be calculated from equation 1 as
............. (2)
6
DIODE WITH LC LOAD (CONTD..)
The voltage Vc across the capacitor can be expressed as

DIODE WITH LC LOAD (CONTD..)
Conclusions
1. At time t = t1= , the diode current i falls to zero and
the capacitor is charged to 2Vs.
2. As there is no resistance in the circuit, so, there is no
energy losses.
3. Hence in the absence of any resistance, the current in
the LC circuit oscillates and the energy is transferred
from L to C and vice versa.
8
DIODE WITH LC LOAD (CONTD..)
Problem 1: A diode circuit with an LC load is as shown in
Figure 4 below with the capacitor having an initial voltage
Vc(t=0)= -Vco = -220V, Capacitance, C= 20μF, and
inductance, L= 80 μH. If the switch S1 is closed at t=0,
determine (a) peak current through the diode (b) the
conduction time of the diode (c) the final steady-state
capacitor voltage.

DIODE WITH RLC LOAD (CONTD..)
The roots of the quadratic equation (9) is given as
........ (10)
............... (11)
............... (12)
12
DIODE WITH RLC LOAD (CONTD..)
The solution of the current depends upon the values of α
and ω0 and will have three possible cases
Case I: Critically Damped Circuit : If α = ω0 and hence two
roots are equal i.e. s1=s2. Hence the solution takes the
form ............... (13)
Case II: Over Damped Circuit: If α > ω0, the roots are real
and the solution takes the form ............... (14)
Case III: Under damped Circuit: If α < ω0, the roots are
complex and the roots are
............... (15)

DIODE WITH RLC LOAD (CONTD..)
In equation (15), ωr is called the ringing frequency (or
damped resonant frequency)and given as
And the solution takes the form (it is decaying sinusoidal
function)
............... (16)
14
DIODE WITH RLC LOAD (CONTD..)
The constants A1 and A2 are normally determined from the
initial condition of the circuit.
Power electronics circuit are normally underdamped
system such that the circuit current becomes sinusoidal
for ac output or to turn off a semiconductor device.

DIODE WITH RLC LOAD (CONTD..)
Problem 3: For a RLC circuit in Figure 4 Vs = 220V, L=2 mH
C=0.05 μF And resistance R = 160 Ω. Initial capacitor
voltage and inductor current is zero. Determine (a) an
expression for the current i(t) and (b) conduction time of
the diode (c) sketch the current waveform.
