LC Load. A diode circuit with an LC load is shown in Figure 2.15a.
The source voltage Vs is a dc constant voltage. When switch S1 is

LC Load. A diode circuit with an LC load is shown in Figure 2.15a.
The source voltage Vs is a dc constant voltage. When switch S1 is
closed at t = 0, KVL around the loop gives Equation 2.29 :

With initial conditions i(t = 0) = 0 and vc(t = 0) = 0, Eq. (2.29) can

be solved for the capacitor current i , the charging current i of the
capacitor is expressed as:

LC Load...The rate of rise of the current is obtained from Eqn (2.30)
as:

and Eq. (2.33) gives the initial rate of rise of the current (at t = 0) as

The voltage vc across the capacitor can be derived as:

At a time t = t1 = π √LC, the diode current i falls to zero and the

capacitor is charged to 2 Vs. The waveforms for the voltage VL and

LC Load... Note: Because there is no resistance in the circuit, there
can be no energy loss. Thus, in the absence of any resistance, the
current of an LC circuit oscillates and the energy is transferred from C
to L and vice versa.

Example 2.5 Finding the Voltage and Current in an LC Circuit.
A diode circuit with an LC load is shown in Figure 2.16a with the capacitor
having an initial voltage; Vc(t=0) = -Vc0 = Vo - 220 V, capacitance, C =
20μF; and inductance, L = 80μH. If switch S1 is closed at t = 0, determine
(a) the peak current through the inductor, (b) the conduction time of the
diode, and (c) the final steady-state capacitor voltage.

Example 2.5 Finding the Voltage and Current in an LC Circuit…
(a) the peak current through the diode, (b) the conduction time of the
diode, and (c) the final steady-state capacitor voltage.
Solution. Using KVL we get:
It can be solved to find the
current i with initial conditions of i(t =0) = 0 and vc(t = 0) = -Vc0 is
solved as

where ωo = 1/ √(LC) = 106 /√(20 X 80) = 25,000 rad/s.

a. The peak current Ip is, Ip = Vco √(C/L) = 220 √(20/80) = 110 A
