BRAKE SYSTEM

Autosport’s Club
Brakes

External artificial Stops vehicle at desired

frictional resistance location

Converts kinetic energy

Avoids accidents
into heat energy

Works on
1)Friction
2)Levers
3)hydraulics
Brakes Requirements

Create enough
deceleration

Avoid Manage or
skidding dissipate heat

Good control Have good

Hydraulic braking system

Pascal’s law:
The pressure exerted anywhere in a mass
of confined liquid is transmitted
undiminished in all directions throughout
the liquid.

Components of hydraulic disc brake system

1.Brake pedal
2.Brake booster
3.Fluid reservoir
4.Master cylinder
5.Disc Rotor
6.Caliper

Hydraulic brakes

Master cylinder
Converts driver force into the oil pressure

Types:-
1.Single piston master cylinder
2.tandem master cylinder
Hydraulic brakes

Tandem Master Cylinder

Hydraulic disc brakes

Master cylinder + Reservoir assembly

integrated (reservoir) master remote (reservoir)

Hydraulic system configuration

1.front-rear split 2.Diagonal split

Disc rotor

• Generally made up of cast iron , stainless steels

Hydraulic disc brakes

Brake Caliper

• A body which consist of pistons and brake pads assembly

Mounted on the steering knuckle .

Hydraulic disc brakes

Brake Caliper
Types
• 1.fixed caliper
• 2.floating caliper

1.fixed brake caliper

Floating Caliper
hydraulic brakes

Brake pads

• Friction material
• Coefficient of friction
• Must not wear rapidly
• Anti fade characteristics
• Material:- Asbestos, organic (NAO)-glass fiber ,rubber,kevlar,carbon
Semi metallic-(30-65% metal by weight Fe,cu,steel)
Fluid lines

• transmits brake oil from master cylinder to brake caliper.

• Brake pipes:-rigid ,made from steel
• Brake hoses:-rubber, steel braided
Brake fluid

Types:-
hygroscopic-
DOT 3:-glycol ether based fluid
DOT 4:-glycol ether based fluid
DOT5.1:-glycol ether/borate ester based fluid
Changed regularly for better performance

Non hygroscopic(hydrophobic)
DOT 5:- silicon based fluid and mineral oil based
maintains its boiling point over large temperature variation
Less corrosive
Does not need to be changed frequently

Joints

2) cross joints (4 way splitter )

1)T-joints (3 way splitter)

Wheel locking and its effects
Front wheels lock :-
1) can't steer the vehicle
2)vehicles gos straight
3 accidents may happens if you are on the curved path

Rear wheels lock :-

1)front wheels moves straight
2)rear wheels deviate to the side
3)vehicle may be unable to take straight path and
Rear part may spin around the front part

All four wheel locks:-

1)you lose control over steering
2)also lose control over brakes
3) vehicle goes straight
4)the wheels skids and stopping distance increases considerably
