JOURNEY TOWARDS
THE
THEORY . . .
THEORY OF GOAL ATTAINMENT
*Focuses on the attainment of certain life
goals.

*It explains that the nurse and patient go

hand-in-hand in communicating information,
set goals together, and then take actions to
achieve those goals.
FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE ATTAINMENT OF
GOALS:
1. roles
2. stress
3. space
4. time

* The goal of the nurse is to help patients maintain

their health so they can function in their individual
roles. The nurse’s function is to interpret information
in the nursing process, to plan, implement, and
evaluate nursing care.
THREE HUMAN FUNDAMENTAL NEEDS

1. The need for health information.

2. The need for care that seeks to
prevent illness.
3. The need for care when the patient
is unable to help him or herself.
BASIC ASSUMPTIONS
*Nursing focus is care of human
beings.
*Nursing goal is the health care of
individual and groups.
*Human beings : are open system
interacting constantly with their
environment.
PROPOSITIONS
*1. If perceptual interaction accuracy is
present in nurse client interaction
transaction will occur.
*2. If nurse and client make transaction,
goal will be attained.
*3. If goal is attained, satisfaction will
occur.
*4. If transactions are made in nurse-client
interactions, growth and development will
be enhanced.
*5. If role expectations and role
performance as perceive by nurse and
client are congruent, transaction will
occur.
*6. If role conflict is experienced by nurse
or client or both, stress in nurse-client will
occur.
*7. If nurse with special knowledge skill
communicate appropriate information to
client, mutual goal attainment will occur.
NURSING PROCESS STEPS

 Diagnosis
 Planning

 Evaluation
METAPARADIGM
NURSING
“Nursing is a process of action, reaction and
interaction whereby nurse and client share
information about their perceptions in the
nursing situation.”

“A process of human interactions between

nurse and client whereby each perceives the
other and the situation, and through
communication, they set goals, explore
means, and agree on means to achieve goals.”
PERSON / INDIVIDUAL

Individual are social beings who are

national and sentient. Humans
communicate their thoughts, actions,
customs, and beliefs through
language.
HEALTH
Health is a dynamic life experience of
a human being, which implies continuous
adjustment to stressors in the internal
and external environment through
optimum use of one’s resources to
achieve maximum potential for daily
living.
ENVIRONMENT
Environment is the background
for human interactions. It is
both external to, and internal
to the individual.
