Leopold’s Maneuver

Instruction: Check on the column of your choice as to what level is the performance of the student in the following procedure. Be
guided in the scoring with the legend below.
4 Very satisfactory (Performed all the procedures correctly)

STEP PROCEDURE 4 3 2 1
1 Explains the procedure and its purpose to the client.
2 Instructs the client to empty her bladder.
3 Provides the client with privacy appropriate to the procedure.
4 Positions the client in supine with knees slightly flexed, placing a small pillow or rolled towel on the right
side of the client.
5 Washes hands with warm water.
6 Observes the client’s abdomen determining the longest diameter and where the fetal movement is apparent.
First Maneuver – FUNDAL GRIP
7 Stands at the foot side of the client and faces the client.
8 Places both hands flat on the client’s abdomen.
9 Palpates the superior surface of the fundus determining the abdomen’s consistency and shape.
Second Maneuver – UMBILICAL GRIP
10 Places the palms of each hand on either side of the abdomen.
11 Palpates the side of the uterus by keeping the left hand stationary on the left side of the uterus while the
right hand palpates the right side of the uterus from top to bottom.
12 Repeats palpation by keeping the right hand stationary on the right side of the uterus while the left hand
palpates the left side of the uterus from top to bottom.
Third Maneuver – PAWLIK’S GRIP
13 Using the thumb and index finger, gently grasp the lower portion of the abdomen (just above the
symphysis pubis) and gently presses fingers together.
14 Determines the fetal presentation by noting any movement and whether the part is firm or soft.
Fourth Maneuver – PELVIC GRIP (to be performed only if the presentation is cephalic)
15 Stands on one side of the client facing towards the foot of the client.
16 Places fingers on both sides of the uterus (approximately 2 inches above the inguinal ligaments).
17 Presses fingers downward and inward in the direction of the birth canal allowing the fingers to be carried
downward.
18 Provides the client with a brief description of findings.
19 Assists the client to sit up and stand.
20 Performs complete aftercare.
