General Considerations:
1. Explain the procedure to the client.
2. Perform hand washing before touching the client.
2. Empty the client’s bladder.
3. Completely expose the client’s abdomen just below the breast and above the pubis.
4. Instruct the client to relax the abdomen.
5. Warm the examiner’s hands.
Procedures:
1st Maneuver
1. Face the woman’s head.
2. Place the hand on the side of the fundus and curve your fingers to the fundus.
3. Palpate for shape, size, consistency and mobility.
4. Determine what lies in the fundus.
2nd Maneuver
1. Place hands on both sides of the uterus about midway between the symphysis pubis and
fundus.
2. Apply pressure with one hand against the sides of the uterus, thereby pushing the fetus to the
other side of the abdomen against the examining hand and stabilizing it there. Maintain the
pressure while the examining hand palpates the other side of the uterus..
3. Palpate the entire area with the examining hand, form the abdominal midline to the lateral side
and from the symphysis pubis to the fundus.
4. Reverse the procedure with the other side.
5. Identify the fetal part palpated.
3rd Maneuver
1. Press one hand into the lower portion of the abdomen just above the symphysis pubis.
2. Press in slightly and make gentle movement from side to side.
3. Able to determine the engagement of the presenting part.
4th Maneuver
1. Turn and face to the woman’s feet.
2. Make sure that the woman’s knees are bent.
3. Place your hands on the side of the uterus with the palms of your hands just below the level of
the umbilicus and your fingers are directed towards the symphysis pubis.
4. Press deeply with your fingers into the lower abdomen and move them towards the pelvic inlet.
5. Determine the degree of flexion and fetal attitude.
Others:
1. Share your fingers with the woman. Offer to help her identify various part of her baby if she
would like to.
2. Record the result of the maneuver.
3. Position client comfortably.
