BABY BATH METHOD

Instruction: Below is the grading scale which will be used in rating your performance.
5 - Excellent - 95-100
4 - Very Satisfactory - 88-94
3 - Satisfactory - 82-87
2 - Fair - 76-81
1 - Needs Practice - 70-75

Definition: Baby Bath is defined as cleaning the skin of the baby for promoting hygiene
and comfort.

 Basin/ tub
 Water
 Washcloth
 Towel
 Clean diaper and shirt
 Soft clean cotton fabric
 Cotton balls/face cloth

Assessment:

1. Identify the child and check doctor’ order for any specific instruction about
bathing the baby.
2. Assess the general condition of the baby and need for bathing.
3. Find out from the mother whether the child had his feeding within the previous
one hour.
4. Decide the type of bath to be given and find out the proper place for the same.

Preparing the bath.
1. Fill the basin with cool water first and
warm water up till one third level of the
tub.
2. Mix the water well and test the
temperature of the water.
3. Squeeze the baby soap into the water and
mix well.
4. Place the newborn onto the bath towel
and gently remove the vest.
5. Leave the diapers on and wrap the
newborn up with the towel keeping the
hands and feet wrapped within the towel.
Cleaning the newborns face.
1. Tip the cotton ball into the cool boiled
water and squeeze out excess water.
2. Clean the newborn’s eyes starting from
the inner corner of the eye and move
outwards. Use a new piece of cotton ball
for each eye and clean in one stroke.

4. Wash the newborns face using cool
boiled water
5. Use cotton balls dipped in the water from
center outwards. Making sure to wipe the
forehead, the nose , mouth and cheeks.
Washing newborns hair
6. Carry the newborn using a football hold.
7. Supporting the head and neck, tucking
between arm and side of the body
8. Tilt the newborns head slightly
backwards over the basin and wash the
hair. Rinse the hair.
9. Dry the hair gently with a corner of the
towel wrap.

10. Place the newborn on the table to unwrap


and remove the diaper.
Place the newborn into the tub for a bath.
1. Position the left hand under the newborns
shoulder to support and hook fingers
under the newborns armpit to have a good
grasp.
2. Slide right hand under the buttocks and
grip the newborn’s thigh and lift into the
bath tub.
3. Allow the newborn to sit into the tub with
left hand still supporting the newborns
shoulder while keeping the newborn’s
head above the water level.
4. Release right hand grip and bathe the
newborn’s front and private area with the
help of a face cloth. Once done, use the
right hand to take over the grip under the
newborn’s armpit and allow newborn to
lean forward over the right arm while
cleaning the back and buttocks with the
left hand.
5. When done, lift the newborn out of the
water.
6. Place the newborn gently onto the towel
and pat dry. Pay attention to skin folds
and be sure to dry behind the ears in
between fingers and toes.
7. Before dressing the newborn, be sure to
clean the umbilical area.
8. Dress the newborn with comfortable
clothes.
9. Record the type of bath, any abnormal
findings on the skin with date and time
Cleaning the umbilical cord
1. Wash the hands before cleaning the
umbilical cord.
2. Use cotton balls dipped in cool boiled
water and squeeze dry
3. To clean the base of the cord with one
circular motion. Discard the cotton after
use.
4. Clean the side of the cord from the base
