ON
BABY BATH
INTRODUCTION:

• The hygiene care of the new born Is very important to


prevent various infection. The new-born body
temperature regulating mechanism are undeveloped,
so measure to avoid over heating and chilling bath
time provide opportunity for observation and
assessment of new born
DEFINITION

Baby bath is a procedure to maintain hygiene of


the baby to prevent of harmful organism.
Baby bath is defined as cleaning the
skin of the baby for promoting hygiene and
comfort.
TYPES OF BABY BATH:

1.Sponge bath

2.Tub bath

3.Lap bath

4.Oil bath

1.sponge bath

• sponge bath is given to infants who are actually

ill babies.

• This is the common method of giving bath to a
baby. The body is submerged into the water in a

tub or basin.

3.lap bath
• when tub bath is not possible mothers keep their
babies on their lap and give the bath.

4.oil bath
• pre mature babies and sick babies are given oil bath.
• Oil is applied all over the body and it is wiped off with
cotton balls or rag piece when the baby's body is covered
with vernixcaseosa.
PURPOSES

• To clean the body off dirt and bacteria.

• To stimulate circulation.
• To induce sleep.
• To provide comfort to the baby.

• To closely observe the body for evidence of any


abnormalities and to note build growth and development.
• To refresh the baby.
General instruction for giving baby bath

• Use warm room and warm water


• Bath quickly and gently

• Dry quickly.
• Never leave the baby unattended and in a bath tub or table.
• For infant given bath after the cord and umbilicus is well
healed.
• Do not give the bath baby after feeding.

• Wash hands before and after the procedure.


• All needed equipment should be at hand and conveniently
placed before beginning the procedure so as to avoid leaving the
baby unnecessarily until the entire procedure has been
completed.
• The temperature of the water should be adjusted for the
comfort of the baby and water should be maintain at a
comfortable temperature.
PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT :

• Check the physician orders to see the specify precaution


to be taken if any.
• Assess the infants need for bath.
• Check the temperature, respiration, and colour of the skin.
• Check whether child has taken the feed in previous one
hour.
• Check the articles available in the unit
CONTRA INDICATIONS

• Hypothermia

• Convulsions
• Bronchopneumonia
• Premature infant
• Congenital cyanotic heart diseases.

PREPARATION OF THE BABY AND UNIT

1.explain the mother what you are going to do.


2.check the room temperature and warm if it is necessary.
3.close the windows and put off the fan to prevent draughts.
Adjust the position of the bath table or tub to prevent the baby from
falling.
a. keeps the table against the wall.
b. place the tub or basin on one end of the table and place the toilet
tray and the clothing on the other hand.
c. place the mackintosh towel over table

4.collect all the articles in readiness before beginning the


procedure.

5.fill the basin half with warm water.

6. wash hands and wear apron.

7. bring the baby to the bath table.

8. check the baby is wet with urine or stool, if wet clean the baby.

9. undress the baby and wrap in the big towel, wrap the baby in
such a way that his or her hands are restrained in the towel.
AFTER CARE OF THE BABY :
NURSES RESPONSIBILITIES

1.cover the cord stump wit cord powder.


2.dress the baby as early as possible, wrap the baby in the blanket
to prevent chill.

3.comb the hair.


4.hand over the baby to mother to give the feed.

5. Take the articles to the utility room, disinfect the towel and basin.
6.wash hands.
7.record the procedure with date and time.
