SOLAR ECLIPSE
A solar eclipse is a phenomenon that occurs when the moon is located between the
earth and the sun. A solar eclipse occurs when the position of the moon is located between
the earth and the sun so that it appears to cover part or all of the sunlight in the earth’s
sky. A solar eclipse does not occur at every new moon phase, because the moon’s orbit is
tilted 5 ° to the ecliptic plane (the plane of the earth’s orbit around the sun) so that the
position of the moon is often not in line with the earth and the sun. A solar eclipse is a
moment that can be said to be very rare. Typically, a solar eclipse will have a very long
duration of time. When compared to lunar eclipses, solar eclipses usually occur less
frequently.

Based on the way the sun is closed, there are three types of solar eclipses, namely,
total solar eclipse, ring solar eclipse, and partial solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse occurs
when the sun, moon, and earth lie in a straight line. Here the entire sun will be covered
with the moon’s shadow. A ring solar eclipse occurs when the sun, moon and earth are in
parallel lines. At that time, the disc of the moon observed from the earth was smaller than
the sun. A partial solar eclipse occurs when the moon is not exactly in the middle of the
line between the sun and the earth, so it only covers part of the sun. This eclipse always
has a part of the solar disk that is not covered by the lunar disc.
Observing and seeing a solar eclipse directly, even in just a few seconds, can cause
permanent damage to the retina of the eye due to the intense radiation. This can cause
vision damage, even leading to blindness. Because the retina can’t feel pain, retinal damage
can go unnoticed. During an eclipse, the sun is covered by the moon making it easier and
more interesting to see. Looking at the sun during an eclipse has the same dangers as
normal conditions, except when the sun is completely closed. This is not the case for
partial and ring eclipses; in a total eclipse this only occurs for a very short period of time
and beyond that short time the sun is only partially covered. Looking at the sun, even using
equipment such as binoculars, telescopes and optical cameras is extremely dangerous and
can cause permanent eye damage in less than a second.

To avoid eye damage, observing a solar eclipse requires eye protection or an indirect
method of observation. Eye protection is carried out with filters specially designed to
block harmful radiation from the sun. Ordinary sunglasses or household items are usually
not enough to see a solar eclipse. A safer way to observe an eclipse is indirect observation.
This can be done by projecting an image of the sun onto a screen, such as a white paper.
This can be done by placing a piece of cardboard with a small hole 1mm in diameter between
the sun and the screen, a device called a pinhole camera. In addition to pinhole cameras,
you can use a small telescope or binoculars that can enlarge the projection of the sun on the
screen.
