Teaching Common ICT

Competencies
Module 2:
Computer Hardware Servicing –
Occupational Health, and the
Tools of the Trade
Computer Hardware Servicing
Last week, our first meeting, we started our course with
a review of basic ICT concepts, then we dived in and
discussed opportunity seeking and the marketing
environment.
Computer Hardware Servicing
This week, we shall begin with Computer Hardware
Servicing (CHS) by discussing occupational health and
safety (OHS), the 5S of Good Housekeeping, as well as
the tools and equipment of computer hardware
servicing.

 Set-up new computers
 Configure computers, cell phones and internet
 Install software into computers and cell
phones
 Troubleshoot and fix computer and internet
problems

 How can I become a computer technician:
 Learn the trade through
 Formal education
 Self-study

 Pass the competency assessment

 Earn experience
Occupational Health and Safety
 Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)

 OHS is an area concerned with the safety, health and

welfare of people engaged in work or employment
 Goals: to foster a safe and healthy work environment
 OHS can be important for moral, legal, and financial
reasons
Occupational Health and Safety
 Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)

 defined by the World Health Organization (WHO)

"occupational health deals with all aspects of health and
safety in the workplace and has a strong focus on primary
prevention of hazards."
Occupational Health and Safety
 OHS for Computer System Servicing

 Read and follow instruction on the manual carefully.

 Before you do anything, listen to your trainer’s instructions
to prevent accidents or any unwanted events that may
occur on your workplace.
 Be aware of contingency measures during workplace
accidents, for example fire and other emergencies
procedures.
 Personal protective equipment (PPE) are correctly used in
accordance with the organization’s OHS procedures and
practices.
Occupational Health and Safety
 OHS for Computer System Servicing

 Hazard/risks in the workplace and their corresponding

indicators are identified to minimize or eliminate risk to co-
workers, workplace and environment.
 Always discharge static electricity from your body by
touching the bare metal back of the PC before starting
work on the computer.
 Hold PC components especially memory and expansion
cards by their edges and do not touch the ICs and the gold
edge connectors.
 Be careful when working with tools that may cause short
circuits.
Occupational Health and Safety
 OHS for Computer System Servicing

 Wear rubber soled shoes when working on PCs on a

concrete floor.
 Always power off and unplug the computer equipment
before working on it.
 When making circuit changes, switch off and unplug the
power cord from the equipment and then discharge the
capacitors.
 Replace fuses only with the proper rating.
Occupational Health and Safety
 OHS for Computer System Servicing

 Do not use excessive force if PC components do not slip

into place.
 Do not tighten screws in the PC too tightly.
5S of Good Housekeeping
 The 5S of Good Housekeeping

 5S is the name of a workplace organization method that

uses a list of five Japanese words
 5S describes how to organize a work space for efficiency
and effectiveness by identifying and storing the items
used, maintaining the area and items, and sustaining the
new order
 Five primary 5S phases: translated from Japanese as
"sort", "straighten", "shine", "standardize", and "sustain"
5S of Good Housekeeping
 The 5S of Good Housekeeping

 Sort
 Remove unnecessary items and dispose of them properly
 Make work easier by eliminating obstacles
 Reduce chance of being disturbed with unnecessary items
 Prevent accumulation of unnecessary items
 Evaluate necessary items with regard to cost or other factors.
 Remove all parts not in use
5S of Good Housekeeping
 The 5S of Good Housekeeping

 Set
 Arrange all necessary items in order so they can be easily available
for use
 Prevent loss and waste of time
 Make it easy to find and pick up necessary items
 Ensure first-come-first-served basis
 Make workflow smooth and easy
 Can also be translated as "set in order" or "streamline"
5S of Good Housekeeping
 The 5S of Good Housekeeping

 Sweep or Shine
 Clean your workplace completely
 Use cleaning as inspection
 Prevent machinery and equipment deterioration
 Keep workplace safe and easy to work
 Can also be translated as "sweep"
5S of Good Housekeeping
 The 5S of Good Housekeeping

 Sanitize or Standardize
 Maintain high standards of housekeeping and workplace
organization at all times
 Maintain cleanliness and orderliness
 Maintain everything in order and according to its standard.
 Everything in its right place
 Prominently display a picture or diagram showing the proper layout
of the workspace.
5S of Good Housekeeping
 The 5S of Good Housekeeping

 Straighten or Sustain
 To keep in working order
 Also translates as "do without being told", (though this doesn't begin
with S).
 Perform regular audits
5S of Good Housekeeping
 The 5S of Good Housekeeping

 Additional Ss
 Safety
 Security
5S of Good Housekeeping
 What’s wrong here?

Poblacion, Hagonoy, Bulacan

5S of Good Housekeeping
 Garbage! Garbage everywhere!

 We need our environment to survive and thrive, but if we over-

exploit the environment we damage it. How can we protect and
care for our environment while at the same use its natural
resources to survive and thrive?

 The 5S of Good Housekeeping may not be the answer, but if we

can apply 5S in our daily lives, it is a good first step.

 I know this is a module on Computer Systems Servicing and not

Environmental Philosophy, but these principles apply here too. I
have a few suggestions on what we can do to learn about and
apply 5S and help our environment at the same time:
5S of Good Housekeeping

1. Let us clean up our

surroundings. For example,
dengue mosquitoes breed
in stagnant water. Get rid
of all junk in our backyard
where water collects. Not
only will our yard be
cleaner and more
aesthetic, we’ll also be safe
from dengue fever and
other diseases.
5S of Good Housekeeping

Related to this, avoid the

use of single-use plastics
such as plastic bags and
plastic cups. Remember,
plastics are forever so after
one single use, these items
become trash for thousands
of years to come, fouling
the environment and killing
wildlife. So avoid them, use
something else that is more
environmentally friendly.
5S of Good Housekeeping

Let us keep our

surroundings clean, even if
the people around us
won’t. There is a saying
“cleanliness is next to
Godliness”; keep that in
mind, and in this context of
environmentalism, I’d say
this is very important.
5S of Good Housekeeping
2. Let us plant trees, flowers,
vegetables, a garden,
anything. Plants absorb the
greenhouse gas carbon
dioxide in order to grow. The
more plants that are planted,
the more CO2 is removed
from our atmosphere.
Besides, ornamental plants
are things of beauty and can
be sold for good money; while
food plants can be harvested
for basically free food.
5S of Good Housekeeping
3. Finally, let us teach these
values to the next
generations. It is our
responsibility to leave behind
for them a world where they
can enjoy the same beauty
and bounty of nature that we
did, and at the same time to
teach them the value of caring
and protecting that world. Let
us be like the Japanese, who
teach their children the value
of cleanliness and orderliness
at a very early age.

and Systems

 Sit back and watch the following video:

 Anti Static Safety - Handling Sensitive Electronics

Care in Handling Computer Parts
and Systems
 Static Electricity

 What is Static Electricity?

 Care must be taken when handling computer hardware components
because static electricity can damage these expensive parts
 Static electricity is an imbalance of electric charges within or on the
surface of a material
 The charge remains until it is able to move away by means of an
electric current or electrical discharge

and Systems

 Removal of Static Electricity

 Many semiconductor devices used in electronics are particularly
sensitive to static discharge. Conductive antistatic bags (below left)
are commonly used to protect such components. People who work
on circuits that contain these devices often ground themselves with
a conductive antistatic strap (below right)
