Learning outcome
• Different types of simple and complex sentences

• Subordinating conjunctions in complex sentence

• Suitable phrases in simple sentences


Complex sentence : consists of one main clause and
one or more subordinate clauses .

Subordinate clauses begin with the subordinating


conjunction but sometimes it may be implied in the
sentence .

Ex :When Kamal was describing the accident he


witnessed last month , all members stood silent.
Following are the subordinating conjunctions
always come before a subordinate or
dependent clause
Though/although , So that ,So…that , Since , As
, Because ,If ,When , Whenever , While ,As
soon as ,till , until ,After , Before ,Who ,
Whom , Whose , That , Which , Of which ,In
which , About which ,Than
1.Though/although :( though is more common than
although in general)
Ex : Even though /although it rained ,I enjoyed the
holiday.

2. So that/In order that : Ex : She saved money so


that/in order that she could buy a gift. I closed the
door so that he might not enter the room.
3 So ………..that Ex : We left a message with her
secretary so that she would know we have
come .Belal is so angry so that he will not accept
to talk with us
4. If ( in negative sense)Ex: If you do not study
seriously, you will fail to do good in the exam.

5.If (In positive sense ) If you read seriously ,you can


get A+ in the exam.

6.Since ,As , Because ( complex)


Ex: As the student was late ,he got punishment .
Since the weather was rough ,we could not go out .
Since Belal ran fast ,he got first prize.
7. When ,where Ex: When Belal was five years old,his father
took him to a primary school.

This is the place where you came to meet your friend.

8. Who , which ,whom, that, …..Ex: The man who came


here yesterday is your uncle.

This is the book which Belal lost yesterday.

He is Mr.Hasan whom every body respects.

You know that honesty is the best policy.


Let us know some simple sentences which are often asked
to transform into complex and compound sentences

1.too…to Ex : The place was too noisy to hear anything


properly.

2.To + v1 (infinitive/infinitive phrase) Ex : It is not very


difficult to reduce belly fat.

3.Present participle/Present participle phrase Ex : The


boys saw some birds flying in the sky.
4.Past participle phrase : I read a poem written by
Rabindranath Tagore,
5. Having + V3Perfect Participle Ex : Having said
that I have to admit that the ending of the drama
was motivating. He hotly denied having taken
money.
6.Because of ,due to ,on account of, Owing to :
Ex:Owing to the lack of fund the project will not
continue next year . My fitness is due to regular
exercise . The company went bankrupt because of
poor management.
7.Adjective(modifier) in simple sentence Ex: I enjoyed an
interesting movie yesterday.

8. Adverb of time ,place and manner : Ex : Rabindranath


went to London at his early age.
He speaks English in a spontaneous manner. He saw Helal
on the stage.
9. Inspite of Despite Ex; In spite of his being sick ,he went
to college. Our vacation was a lot of fun , despite the cold
weather.

10. By + gerund /Without + Gerund Ex : By studying


regularly you can make good result.
Without doing exercise regularly you can never expect to
be a man of good health.
