 INTRODUCTION
 Language is an arbitrary vocal symbol system used by members of language society to communicate
and to interact with each other based on their culture (Dardjowidjojo 16). Thus, language is the
important component in a communication system that is used by human.

 Levinson (1983:5) defines pragmatics is the study of the use of the language and pragmatics
concerned about the language and the context. In addition, Leech (1983:36) states that pragmatics
can solve the problem of communication, which is pragmatics solves both from the speaker's point of
view and the addresses point of view.

 According to Culpeper, Bousfield, &Wichman (2003:1546), impoliteness is a strategy in

communication that is designed to attack the other's face in resulting in social conflict and
disharmony. He also added that impoliteness occurs when the speaker intentionally communicates
face-attack to the hearer and when the hearer perceives what the speaker does is the face-attacks, or
it can be the combination of both (Culpeper, 2005:38).
 PREVIOUS STUDIES
 There have been several studies learn in impoliteness strategies fields.
 first is learned by Dony Cahyono (2018) entitled “Impoliteness strategies and power
performed by president Donald Trump on twitter”.
 Dhorifah (2016), in his study about impoliteness in American drama movie entitled
“Boyhood” using transcript movie.
 Pandu Febrian (2019) in his study about impoliteness entitled “Student’s impoliteness in
Classroom interaction at senior high school in Pariaman”.
 “Impoliteness Strategies in UFC Press Conference” by Sofiyan Hadi (2020)
 The other previous study entitled “Impoliteness Strategies used by the main character in
the Hancook movie” by Favian Reswara (2020)
 AIMS OF THE STUDY

This study aims to find the impoliteness strategies that used by the selected characters using
Culpeper’s theory, and to analize the interlocutors reply in the direction of the selected characters
impoliteness based on the context and phrases.

 PROBLEM OF THE STUDY

1. What are the types of impoliteness strategies used by the selected character in the Fury movie?
2. How do interlocutors reply in the direction of the selected characters impoliteness in Fury movie?
 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
the studies might be useful as theoretical improvement for the scholars who issue in linguistic studies
specially in analyzing pragmatics that has impoliteness approach scope to be evolved extra withinside the
future.
this studies is predicted to offer blessings for readers who practice the concept of impoliteness in
reading the selected person in different films and be a connection with readers who will use studies the use
of the concept of impoliteness with the aid of using Jonathan Culpeper.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

 This research will only use “Fury” movie as the data source.
 The researcher will limit the subject of the research to the selected characters, such as Don Wardaddy,
Boyd Swan, Grady travis, and Norman Ellison.
 REVIEW OF LITERATURE
 Pragmatics
Levinson (1983:5) defines pragmatics is the study of the use of the language and pragmatics concerned about the language
and the context.

of the speaker's meaning, a study of contextual meaning. (Yule,1996:3).

Discourse Analysis
According to Fetzer (2014, p. 35), Discourse belongs to the category of terms used repeatedly in all sorts of contexts. This
can be used interchangeably with text to show longer pieces of written or spoken text.

Face
Brown and Levinson (1987: 62) stated that there are two aspects of face concept. The first is positive face. It shows to a
person’s necessity to be acknowledged by others, and be pleasured as a part of a community by sharing needs with others.
Second, is negative face. it explains about the requirement of every person being more self-determining and not easy to be
required in every person.
 Speech Acts
Austin (1962) defines speech acts as actions taken in saying something. According to Austin,
linguistic acts can be analyzed into three different levels, which are called locutionary,
perlocutionary, and illocutionary acts. Locutionary act is an action taken to communicate. The
perlocutionary act is by-products of communication that focus on the hearer’s reaction. While the
illocutionary act is an action that can be achieved by communicating. This action is related to the
intent of the speaker and the goals that are in the mind of the speaker.
Types of Impoliteness Strategies
Culpeper proposed five supers strategies of impoliteness; those are: Bald on Record
Impoliteness, Positive Impoliteness, Negative Impoliteness, Sarcasm or Mock Politeness and
Withhold Politeness.
The Strategies to Counter the Face Attack
The recipients who choose to respond to acts of impoliteness have a further set of theoretical
choices to be open to them; accept (apologize), or they can deflect it (offensive and defensive). This
research used Culpeper’s (1996) theory to analyze the strategies to counter the face attack.
 Fury movie
Fury is a 2014 American war movies, about American armored units in
World War II and the high casualty rates suffered by tank crews in Europe.
Sergeant Wardaddy's Allied Forces have their final, very dangerous mission.
During the last days of World War II, the five veteran crew members of an
American tank nicknamed "Fury" makes their way through an unforgiving
landscape; the war-ravaged Nazi Germany.
 RESEARCH METHOD
 Research Design
qualitative research method involves patterns and structures. Qualitative
approach will provide ability to answer the research questions. The result of this
present research will be in the form words or phrases.

DATA COLLECTION
Research Data:
The researcher will use the entire speeches of the selected characters as the
primary data of this research. The researcher will collect the data in the form of
negative language in the selected character entire utterances based on impoliteness
strategies. The data of this research will be in the words, phrases which are uttered by
the selected character in the Fury movie.
 Data Sources and Subject of the Study
 The Data Source : This research using the utterances in Fury movie as the primary
data. With the assist of the transcript that has been downloaded from http://
www.dailyscript.com/scripts/Fury.pdf.

 The Subject : Don Wardaddy, Boyd Swan, Grady travis, and Norman Ellison, they
are the selected characters as the subject of the research. The tank crew’s that have
the most conversation and monologues in the movie.

 The researcher give codes for each type of impoliteness strategies. the researcher will using
certain codes of the type of impoliteness strategies and strategies to counter the face attacks
propose byJonathan Culpeper.
 the researcher will tabulate the data into group of data cards. The data card consist of the movie
title, words/phrases of the selected character, time limit of words/phrases of the selected
character, types of impoliteness strategies, words/phrases of interlocutor response, time limits of
words/phrases of interlocutor response, and types of strategies to counter face attacks.
 Data Analysis
After accumulating the data, the subsequent step became analyzing the data. This
step become performing to get the particular records meant to be analyze. First, the
researcher will categorize the data primarily based totally at the kind of utterance at the
impoliteness strategy and the strategy to counter the face attacks withinside the narration
form.
Then, the researcher will analyze the means of characters utterances that seek advice
from impoliteness strategies. In the meantime, the researcher will analyze the utterance of
