What does TOEFL
stand for?
What is it?
TOEFL is an abbreviation of Test of English as a
Foreign Language
The TOEFL test is an internationally accepted
standard of English that measures the academic
English proficiency of a non-native speaker of
English.
The TOEFL test is required by more than 7,000
colleges, universities and licensing agencies in 110
countries throughout the world.
What about Indonesia?
InIndonesia TOEFL ITP is widely used
as a measurement of English Proficiency
in many agencies ranging from
Government Institutions, universities,
state owned corporations (BUMN),
private companies, multinational
companies, schools, and so on.

TOEFL is a registered trademark of the
Educational Testing Service (ETS), a
private non-profit organization, which
designs and administers the tests
worldwide. ETS issues official score
reports, sent independently to
institutions, for two years following the
test.

between TOEFL and
TOEIC?
TOEFL measures the ability of non-native
speakers of English to use and understand
English as it is spoken, written and heard in
college and university settings.
As opposed to the TOEIC test (TEST OF
ENGLISH FOR INTERNATIONAL
COMMUNICATION) that measures the use of
English in a business context, the TOEFL test
has an academic focus.
Who uses the TOEFL
test?
Students who want to study further: For non-native
speakers who hold degrees or diplomas from post-
secondary institutions in English speaking countries
Academic institutions: To determine academic
readiness and make admissions decisions for
international applicants
Individuals who are applying for professional licensure
or certification
Many government, licensing and certification agencies,
as well as exchange and scholarship program also use
TOEFL scores as a decision-making tool.
How many types of
TOEFL are there?
1. IBT: internet Based Test
Listening – Reading – Speaking – Writing .
(Score Range: 0 – 120)
2. PBT (ITP): Paper Based Test
Listening – Structure/written expression –
Reading. (score range: 290 – 677)

Internet-based test
The Internet-based test (iBT) looks like this:
Reading section: 60-80 minutes | 36-56 questions
Listening section: 60-90 minutes | 34-51 questions
Short break: 10 minutes
Speaking section: 20 minutes | 6 tasks
Writing section: 50 minutes | 2 essays
Paper-based test
The paper-based test looks like this:
Listening section: 30-40 minutes| 50 questions
Writing section: 25 minutes | 40 questions
Reading section: 55 minutes | 50 questions
Know Why You Are Taking the
TOEFL Test
For example, you might be taking the test:
To find out your level of English with an official exam
To apply to a university
To meet the university requirements
For a course or job
For your immigration requirement
Set Your Realistic Target of Score
Write down your minimum and your ideal scores on a
piece of paper or a Post-it note, and put it somewhere you see
every day. For example, if I want to get into Arizona State
University, the minimum score is 500. My ideal score might
be higher, though: 530.
Make sure your ideal score is realistic. Take a practice test
and check where you are now. How many more points do
you need to reach your minimum and ideal scores? How
many months do you have to prepare before the exam?
How much time can you spend each week studying?
Create Three Ideal Study Spaces
Find your top three ideal study locations. (Your room, the
library, your office, café, and so on).
Create a quiet zone. (Make sure there is no distraction)
Keep your study space clean and organized.
Schedule your study, breaks, snack and mealtimes.
Clear your mind. Exercise and do some meditation or
relaxation exercises for a positive mindset.

Teacher or Peer
Hire a teacher or a tutor. The benefit of having a teacher or a tutor is
the qualified and professional advice and support you will receive.
These people are experienced in explaining the grammar rules, and can
give you specific and personalized exercises and help.

Find other English learners and native speakers in your area
Find support within online communities
On Facebook, type in “TOEFL” into the search bar, for example. Scroll
down and click “see all results.” On the top right click “more” then
click “groups.” You will then see all TOEFL-related groups on
Facebook.
You can also search for “language exchange,” “English learning,” “
EFL,” “ESL learners” and many other keywords.
Practice Reading Non-technical
English
Read for 30 minutes every day for general topics such as:
News (https://breakingnewsenglish.com/), story archives (
http://literacynet.org/cnnsf/archives.html), The English
Server for short story and fiction (https://
fiction.eserver.org/placeholder-short)
Ask yourself questions and summarize your reading. For
example, What did you read about?, What was the main idea?,
What was the conflict?, Who are the main characters?,
Improve your vocabulary
Underline new words. Look up their meanings in a dictionary
and write them down in a notebook or on flashcards. Use
these new words in sentences throughout the day, and during
your speaking and writing practice.
Practice Listening to English with Your
Learning Goal in Mind
Focus on:
The main ideas. What is the main topic?
The purpose. Why is the speaker talking? To educate? To
give an opinion? To complain? Etc.
Transitions. How does the speaker change from one idea to
the next?
Stress and intonation. Where does the speaker place stresses
within sentences? When does the pitch of their voice get
higher and lower?
Listen to English speakers as much
as possible

Stop your clip or audio every 2-5 minutes and
ask yourself some question. What’s the topic?
What was the main idea? Who are the characters?

ITP TOEFL
The ITP TOEFL test comprises three sections (plus a
30-minute writing test if it is PBT) :
Listening Comprehension measures the ability to
understand English
Structure and Language measures the ability to
recognize language that is appropriate for standard
written English
Reading Comprehension measures the ability to
understand non-technical reading matter in English

The order of the questions are the same order with the order of the
conversation
Listening Problems
I cannot catch clearly what the speaker says.
The speaker speaks too fast.
I cannot follow what the speaker says.
Every word seems to be connected one to another
so I am totally blank about what the speaker says.
I am lost in translation. I know nothing about
what the speaker says. Every word is strange to
my ears!
