Prabhavati Dutt Bose and Janakinath Bose, an advocate belonging to a Bengali Kayastha family. He was
• His primary education happened at Protestant European School (presently Stewart High School) in
Cuttack, in 1902, and then later shifted to then shifted to the Ravenshaw Collegiate School
• His young mind was influenced by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna after reading
their works, further more the behavior of British towards the Indians in public and the outbreak of World
• His nationalistic temperament came to light when he was expelled for assaulting Professor Oaten (who
had manhandled some Indian students) for the latter's anti-India comments.
BACKGROUND
• Bose had been a leader of the younger, radical, wing of the Indian National
Congress in the late 1920s and 1930s, rising to become Congress President in
1938 and 1939.
• However, he was ousted from Congress leadership positions in 1939 following
differences with Mahatma Gandhi and the Congress high command.
• He was subsequently placed under house arrest by the British before escaping
from India in 1940

He was imprisoned 11 times by British authorities between 1925 and 1940.
In 1940 he escaped his house arrest and went to Russia via Afghanistan.

He was a believer of unqualified Swaraj including use of force to achieve it,
shows he was practical and a believer in realpolitik
Leadership Skills:
The British could rule over India for close to 200 years
but getting these people to break their oath to the
British king and the king’s army for the sake of the
country’s freedom was indeed a huge accomplishment.
Negotiation Skills:
Netaji was able to persuade Germans though he was not
physically present in Germany, but thousands of
kilometers away in Singapore, it does speak highly of the
influence that Netaji wielded over the German high
command and Hitler himself

Don’t Shy Away From Work:
Netaji was a doer. He could have lived
comfortably in Berlin until the end of the war
and enjoyed all the privileges But no, he sailed
8,000 miles through the thick of the war in a
cramped U-Boat all the way to Singapore to
raise another army of Indian PoWs.
Equal Opportunities:
The INA units were formed as all-India units
devoid of any bias towards caste, creed or
color. After Independence, the new units
raised by the Indian Army was modelled on
this concept
