Economics, American cultural
Anthropologist Marshall
Sahlins ( 1972) has identified
three main types of reciprocity.
1. Generalized Reciprocity
2. Balanced or Symmetrical
Reciprocity
3. Negative Reciprocity

person shares goods, labor
or expertise with another
members of the community
without expecting
anything in return

Transfer
 This is a payment or redistribution of income to
individuals by the government, accomplished through
different social benefit programs.
 4Ps – DSWD
 Started by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and
continued by President Benigno Aquino III administration,
4Ps has two major objectives –
1. Social Assistance – giving monetary support to extremely
poor families to respond to their immediate needs
2. Social Development – breaking the intergenerational
poverty cycle by investing in the health and education of
the poor children through program such as follows:
 Health check-ups for pregnant women and children,
infants to 5 years old
 Deworming of school children aged 6 -14
 Enrollment of children in daycare, elementary, and
secondary school
 Family development sessions
Redistribution
 The centralized collection of goods in a society to be redistributed for the
benefit of all its people.
 Redistribution may function as an economic levelling system in an
unequal society.
These mechanism are practiced in a society to solve
or alleviate distribution problems and / or social
inequality.
