Broadway bus stand
The Broadway bus terminus is the largest city bus terminus of
the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai), Chennai. It is
located in the heart of the city or its downtown[1] - Parry's corner &
Fort. It lies opposite the Madras High Court along
the Esplanade in George Town. It is a connecting point to several areas
in the city. The bus terminus is located at the southern end
of Broadway and is near the Chennai Fort suburban railway station.
General observation : Broadway busterminus , George town , Chennai

It is nearest to central railway station
•
It is near to high court

The Eastern road are narrow comparing to south and northern sides
•
It act as a. Transition bustand ( intracity bustand )

The roads are crowded and leads to slow moving traffic during peak times

It has nearest station such as beach station, fort station ,park station

Beach station is the end point for the buses coming from chengalpattu or thambaram

•       It is located near burma Bazar which is the electonic bazaar of chennai once upon a time

Opposite to the bustand the general area names include pookada (flower bazaar, mannadi (muslim area) and saidhap

• The bustand have parallel streets in the northern direction eaxh strret is a whole sale shop
areas which has texitile lights groceries stationary fruits vegtables and all kind of goods

The bustand act as a hub

Since it is a crowed or narrow roads the use of pull carts have been seen thus the bus
terminus also involve the movement of notable number of pull carts
•
• The bus movement involves through the main and the rear entry of the site along with
the side entrance through.highcourt via Eastern directions

Most crowded bustand with no expansion
•  Limited area without any expansion

Nearby to connecting station and central railway station the crowd is huge

The area for social distancing is complicated

No of ppl and busses cant cant regulated or limited as its is an commercial area including whole sale and retail
shopping
•
• The site is linear and oblong rectangular in size where the turning radius is the main factors

Underground construction or mutlistorey level construction need to be relooked at

Possibilities and consideration

Most challenging and critical site

Implementation of design for linear site including heavy crowded area (weighted),proper turning radius , and
social distancing is the prime most consideration
location
Natural physical features

Topography

Macro level
It rises slightly as the distance from the sea shore
increases and an average elevation of the town is not
more than 7 m above mean sea level and the average
slope varies at less than 0.7 m per Km
Site plan
Swot analysis
Strength :
• Stake holders
Major stakeholders are vendors , dailywage workers ,shopkeepers ,
Passengers ( people of Chennai )
• The bus terminal impacts a large number of people of Chennai
,moreover it is a hub which connects all the city buses of Chennai
• People prefer bus as public transport than other mode of transport
like metro due to the fare of metro to travel around Chennai
weakness
Problems faced by broadway bus stand
Opportunities threat
• The site shows a potential in • Lack of sanitation
being the largest visiting bus • Chances of flood due to storm or
stand in Chennai .. cyclone
• Further development is needed • Chances of urban heat (micro
in the sanitation and proper climate in the site due to the
circulation in the site pollution and over crowding)

between 3m to 4.5 m msl  which gradually increaes 0.5 m

Since its a bus terminus the site has been leveled up for the
movement of buses
• Soiltype

Sandy areas are found along the river banks
• and coasts such as Thiruvanmiyur, Adyar,
• Kottivakkam, Santhome, George Town,
• Tondiarpet and the rest of coastal Chennai.
• Here rainwater runoff percolates quickly
• through the soil.
