 Gender stereotypes are the beliefs that people have about the

characteristics of males and females. the content of stereotypes varies
over cultures and over time.

WHY GENDER INEQUALITY OFTEN STARTS AT HOME

From the moment babies are born,

their assigned  (male or female)
immediately begins to shape how
they should be treated, what
opportunities they should receive or
how they should behave according
to dominant gender stereotypes in
their society.
Differential Socialization

 Various agencies reinforce stereotypes:

 FAMILY
 SCHOOL/TEACHERS/CURICULLA
 PEER GROUPS
 MASS MEDIA
 ROLE MODELS
 IMITATION
 EXPECTATIONS
 DIVISION OF LABOUR
 LANGUAGE
  GENDER BOUNDARIES----PUBLIC & PRIVATE SPACE
GENDER INEQUALITY
AS A SOCIAL PROBLEM

Women in poor nations are less likely than their male

counterparts to get a higher education, and girls are less
likely than boys to attend primary school. Women are also
less likely than men to work in jobs that pay a decent wage
and to hold political office
PROGRESS IS TOO SLOW

The struggle for gender equality has been going on for

centuries. yes, we’ve made progress but it is glacially slow:
too much power at too many levels remains concentrated
in male hands. we are also witnessing a worrying trend
where girls’ and women’s rights are under attack from
regressive policies and oppressive laws
GIRLS WANT TO LEAD

 Gender does not define ability and

girls should not be chained to a life
of domestic servitude for want of a Y
chromosome. Girls should feel
liberated to fully enjoy the rights
afforded to them – denying these
rights denies our societies the benefit
of a wealth of talent and energy.

Conclusion

 The gender stereotypes and overall stereotyping continues to not only shape but
also influence the behavior of all people regardless of the environmental setup. As
illustrated above, the burden to conform to societal norms associated with gender
is more often than not rested on men to shoulder it. This is not to say that women
do shoulder any negative perceptions, the women too have their fair share of
tribulations that arise from the gender role stereotype.
