When the English tongue we speak,
Why is break not rhymed with freak?

We say sew but likewise few?

Cannot rhyme his horse with worse?
Beard is not the same as heard.
Cord is different from word.
Cow is cow but low is low.
Shoe is never rhymed with foe.
Think of hose, dose and lose.
 And think of goose and yet choose
Think of comb, tomb and bomb.
Doll and roll or home and some.
Since pay is rhymed with say
Why not paid when said I pray?
Think of blood, food, and good.
Mould is not pronounced like could.
Wherefore done, but gone and lone –
Is there any reason known?
It seems to me that
Sounds and letters disagree.

 Intonation
A melodic pattern of utterance. It involves pitch and stress to
convey a message.

In general, there are two types of intonation.

Falling and Rising intonation
 Intonation
“Your name is John.”
– high to low

“Your name is John?

– low to high
Falling Intonation
Stop it!
STOP it!

Sit down!
Sit DOWN!
 Rising Intonation
If he calls, ask him to come.
If he CALLS, ask him to COME.
Sir, you dropped your notebook.
SIR, you dropped your NOTEbook.

Juncture
It is another measure of intonation. It
suggests the need for or appropriate
pausing to obtain clarity thought.

Three symbols of juncture.
1. (/) Single Bar
2. (//) Double Bar
3. (#) Double Cross

Single Bar (/)

Indicates the need for a slight pause between two thought in
sentence.
Example:
We visited our students (/) who are sick.
One (/) who gets irritated easily (/) is unhappy.

Single Bar (/)

If the sentence consists only one thought, juncture is no longer
needed.
Example:
I am interested in Mathematics.
My teacher teaches Science well.

Single Bar (/)

A changes of places of juncture in the sentence logically
change the meaning of the sentence.
My teacher said / the doctor is pregnant.
My teacher / said the doctor / is pregnant.

Double Bar (//)

Indicates the need for a longer pause between two thought in
the sentence.
Dr. Jose Rizal // our national hero // was born on June 19, 1861.
Mr. Pascual // the dancing student // loves music.

Double Cross (#)

Characterize a drop in pitch. The pausing time responds to a
need for semicolon, colon, or period.
