• His first public performance at 7 and first
composition at 12.

• His music was an essential element for the
western Classic.
•
• His music was intensely powerful and
passionate.
•
• Hardly occurred to most people the he
spent most of his creative years steadily
becoming deaf.
•
• Most of his best compositions came out
when he was stone-deaf.

For 2 year s I have avoided


almost all social gatherings

‘co z it is impossible for me to
say people “I am deaf ”. If I
belonged to some other
pr ofession it would be easier,
but in my pr ofession it is a
frightful state.

It is curious that in a
conver sation ther e are
people w ho do not notice
my condition at all; since I
have gener all y been absent-
minded, they account for it
in that way.

 Eventually he learned to live with his
disability continuing to compose
with scarcely a pause. It’s probably
because he never stopped, even
though he kept having doubts about
his abilities, that he was able to
outwit a cruel fate.


 In fact, some of his greatest works
have been done in this period, music
that rings in defiance down the ages
as living proof of a man who puts
fate in its place and showed the rest
of us that what can be achieved just
by being positive.

