INTRODUCTION
• The address is A story of human predicament that follow
the war. It gives A poignant account of A daughter who
goes to her native place in hall and in search of her
mothers belongings after the war . on the way she does
not pay much attention to the things around as she does
not want to upset herself with the sigh of streets and
houses full of memories of good old days . she does find
her mother ‘S belongings. The objects evoke memories
of her when she finds them in strange surroundings . she
decides to leave it all behind and resolves to move on.
SUMMARY
• A cold reception: the narrator went to her native place in hall
and after the war in search of her mother’s belongings . She
rang the fell of house no. 46 in Marconi street. A women
opened the door a chinked and looked at her searchingly .
The narrator came closer and introduced herself that she was
Mrs. S’s daughter. The women kept staring at her in silence .
there was no sign of recognition on her face. The narrator
thought perhaps she was mistaken . But she was the women
was wearing her mother’s green kitted cardigan. She knew at
once that she had made no mistake . She asked the women
whether she knew her mother .

FORMER DAY
• As the narrator walked slowly back to the station she was

mother told her about Mrs. Dorling . she was an old
acquaintance of the narrator ‘s mother . the next day the
narrator saw Mrs. Dorling going out of their house with a
heavy suitcase . she had a fleeting glimpse of Mrs.
Dorling she asked her mother had told the address
:number 46 Marconi street . the narrator had remembered
it then , the war ended.
The second visit : The narrator first visit to Mrs.
Dorling house was in vain. She decided to try a second
time . this time a girl of about fifteen opened

The door her mother was not at home .The narrator said that she
would wait for her . the girl took her along the passage . the narrator
saw an old fashioned iron candle holder – hanging next to a mirror .
they never used it because it was much heavier than a candle stick .
the woolen table cloth. The cups, the white tea pot with a gold
forded on the lid . the spoons , the pewter plate everything painfully
reminded her of life. Suddenly the objects that were linked in her
memory with the familiar life of former times lost this value . in
strange surrounding, they too appeared strange. She no longer had
desire to possess them. She thought that she would do with them in
her small rented room. She got up walked to the door and left the
room. She resolved to forget the address and moved on.
