Enclosure 1: Information Sheet

Language forms deal with the internal grammatical structure of words and phrases
as well as the word themselves. When one compares boy and boys, for example, or man
and men, he or she is considering the relationship between different language forms or
structures.
Language forms also include cross-curricular academic vocabulary - words or
phrases frequently used across different content-areas.
Cross-curricular academic vocabulary words typically describe or are related to
academic processes and may include:
• verbs (e.g. hypothesize, analyze),
• complex prepositions, (e.g. in contrast to, as well as), and
• nouns (e.g. comparison, conclusion, analysis)
While functions address what we do with language, forms are the language
structures and vocabulary that are used to support those functions. Language learners need
to acquire both the functions (uses/purposes) and the forms (structures + cross-curricular
vocabulary) that make up the English language in order to reach higher levels of proficiency.
Teachers also need to understand the language demands of a task as they relate to both
function and form in order to best support students’ language development.

Unlocking Difficulties
Speech context is the way that people use to communicate and transmit message
orally or verbally. It can be interpersonal where you can talk with the other people.
Intrapersonal where you can talk to yourself especially when thinking and making decisions.
Types of Speech Context

 Intrapersonal Interpersonal.
 Intrapersonal. This refers to communication that centers in one person where the
speaker acts both as the sender and the receiver of message.
 Dyad Communication Small Group Public Mass Communication.

A speech style, according to Martin Joos (1976), a linguist and German professor, it
refers to the form of language that the speaker utilized which is characterized by the level of
formality. Still according to Jooz, speech style is identified into five types: frozen, formal,
consultative, casual, and intimate.
Here are different types of speech styles, the following are frozen, intimate, formal, casual,
and consultative speeches.

The Different Speech Styles

 Frozen. It is the most formal communicative style that is usually used during
respectful events and ceremonies.
 Intimate.
 Formal.
 Casual.
 Consultative.

In linguistics, a speech act is an utterance defined in terms of a speaker's intention

and the effect it has on a listener. Essentially, it is the action that the speaker hopes to
provoke in his or her audience. Speech acts might be requests, warnings, promises,
apologies, greetings, or any number of declarations.

Types of Speech Acts

 Representatives: assertions, statements, claims, hypotheses, descriptions,

suggestions.
 Commissive: promises, oaths, pledges, threats, vows.
 Directives: commands, requests, challenges, invitations, orders, summons,
entreaties, dares.
 Declarations: blessings, firings, baptisms, arrests, marrying, juridical speech acts
such as sentencings, declaring a mistrial, declaring s.o.out of order, etc.
 Expressive: Speech acts that make assessments of psychological states or attitudes:
greetings, apologies, congratulations, condolences, thanksgivings...
 Verdictives: rankings, assessments, appraising, condoning (combinations such as
representational declarations: You're out!)

Communication strategies are strategies that learners use to overcome these

problems in order to convey their intended meaning. Strategies used may include
paraphrasing, substitution, coining new words, switching to the first language, and asking for
clarification.

7 Types of Communicative Strategies

Nomination- presenting a particular topic clearly, truthfully, and saying only what is relevant.
Restriction- constraining the response or reaction within a set of categories.
Turn-taking- recognizing when and how to speak because it is one’s turn.
Topic control- keeping the interaction going by asking questions and eliciting a response.
Topic shifting- introducing a new topic followed by the continuation of that topic
Repair- overcoming communication breakdown to send more comprehensible messages.
Termination - using verbal and nonverbal signals to end the interaction.
