Deaf Culture

Yazmin Serrano – EDU280

What is Deaf Culture?
Deaf Culture refers to the social beliefs, behaviors, art,
literary traditions, history, values, and shared
institutions of communities that are affected by
deafness and which use sign language as the main
means of communication.
Why I chose this topic
I chose this topic because Sign Language has always
intrigued me and it’s something I am very interested in
learning. I know very little of it but try to practice
whenever I have time in hopes of becoming fluent.
Objectives
• Teach about sign language

• Teach why it is important

• How it is showcased in the media and how well

represented it is

• What can be improved?

Current Media
There are many TV shows and movies that feature
deaf or hard of hearing characters, but there
aren’t nearly enough. I believe more
representation is necessary.
Media Examples

Switched at Birth – TV Show Deaf U – TV Show

One of the main characters is deaf and her new New Netflix show about a group of deaf friends
family learns to adjust to it and learn and how they navigate their life
Media Examples

Bratz - Movie Creed II - Movie

One of the main characters has a crush and goes Hard of hearing mom gives birth to a completely
after a deaf boy she is attracted to deaf daughter
Why is this important?
Media representation as well as having the technology
available for students to succeed in the classroom is
important because it allows individuals to be
comfortable about who they are and teaches others
about different things as well as how to accept others.
Conclusion
Deaf culture is important to be represented as
well as taught and supported in the classroom.
Every student deserves the chance to succeed.
