Sonication

• Sonication is the act of applying sound energy to agitate

particles in sample, for various purposes.
• Ultrasonic frequency (>20 kHz) are used, leading to the
process also being known as ultrasonication.

Nanomaterials by ultrasonication
• Sonication is commonly used in nanotechnology for evenly
dispersing naoparticles in liquids.Additionaly , it is used to break up
aggregates of micron-sized colloidal particles.
•Sonochemistry is one of the
earliest techniques used to
prepare nanosize compounds.

•Ultrasonication improves the

mixing of the pre-cursors and
increases the mass-transfer at
the particle surface. This leads
to smaller particle size and
higher uniformity
Nanoscale CdTe (cadmium tellurium) alloy nanoparticles, termed
Quantum Dots (QDs), have unique fluorescent properties that can be
used in photoelectric.

 sonoelectrochemical approach could significantly reduce the

synthesis time.

Ultrasonic Treatment of Nanoparticles for Pharmaceuticals
•Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) have a large inner volume which allows more drug molecules
to be encapsulated.

•CNTs are able to carry various molecules such as active agents, DNA, proteins, peptides,
targeting ligands etc. into cells.

• Sonochemical production of SWCNTs. Silica powder in a solution of ferrocene-xylene

mixture has been sonicated for 20 min. at room temperature and under ambient
pressure.
•Sonication produces high-purity SWCNTS on the surface of the silica powder.
