RF300 and RF45X Rudder feedbacks

• When using RF300 or RF45X together with AD/SD80 boards, do not connect rudder
indicator like RI35 in parallel with the freq. signal. This because these boards are
powered by CAN bus and will not have the same -ve ref. as the indicator.
Use instead NMEA0183 (from AC70 or SI80) for RI35 and current output from RF45X
”converted” to voltage for RI70/80 (see separate drawing).

Ready signal
• Connects to: SD80 board and AD80 Board.
• The Ready signal is given when the autopilot system is operative for taking control.
In case of serious software or hardware failure and when the system is turned off ,
the signal line will open. Some steering gears can use this signal to block
rudder/thruster command in case of a serious autopilot failure.

How to control the vessel’s turn:

- By Rate of Turn (degrees pr. min.)

This is the default setting

- By radius
The pilot is estimating a turn rate, based on
vessel’s speed, to give selected radius

Track approach angle:

Defines the angle the vessel is
approaching a leg in Nav/Track steering
This setting is used both when starting
Nav steering and when using track offset

Tuning the autopilot for best performance
Providing you have entered correct vessel type, lenght and cruising
speed, you may not have to do further tuning
• The speed during the tuning should be as close as possible to cruising
speed
• For displacement boats NORMAL work profile should be used
• Planning boats needs tuning in both Hi spd and Lo spd profile
• All tuning should always be performed in open waters at a safe distance
from other traffic

Initial automatic learning process
Before doing any manual or automatic tuning the autopilot needs to learn
the turn characteristic of the vessel.
This is done in Auto mode by making a major course change (min. 90
degrees) to port and starboard
A satisfactorily tuning should keep the vessel on set heading within an
average of +/- 1 dgree, providing calm sea and wind
It should also give a minimum overshoot when approaching a new
heading after small and major course changes
If steering is not satisfactorily, proceed to Autotune or go directly to
manual tuning

SimNet groups
• This function is used to control
(some) parameters, either globally or
in groups.
• In this example the devices on the
bridge have their backlight and
damping in a different group (1)
• If backlight is adjusted on one of the
units at the remote station (group 2)
it will not affect the devices at the
bridge.
• If damping is adjusted on the AP80 it
will not affect the QS80 and NSE at
the remote station.

• Master systems
– AP70/80 meet the International standard for heading control systems (ISO 11674/ISO
16329) requieries for controlled command transfer when remote stations are provided
– One steering station is defined as Master station. There can be several control units in a
master station, but only one can be Master
– Units outside the master station will be locked and can not be operated until the master
control units opens for it

Service and Maintenance
RPU - Pump Overhaul
• To prevent pilot failure or degraded operation, it is recommended that
installed RPUs be serviced after every 1000 hours of use
• RPU maintenance is a critical field service required by your customers
• Navico recommends the following
– Understand which pump series you will be working on; there are
numerous pump types currently in use, however, some of the older pump
sets are no longer supported with parts. You should also pay attention to
which motor type your current model pump uses, Fracmo (old) or Lemac
(new)
– Order and insure you have all parts before attempting service
– Perform the overhaul in a clean environment, do not attempt to perform
pump maintenance while onboard and especially not while underway
– It is advisable to cover hose ends with a zip-lock bag and use a rubber
band to secure the bag to the hose; this will prevent residual fluid from
leaking and also prevent dust or debris from contaminating the couplings
while the pump is removed for service

RPU - Pump Overhaul
• Check the brushes
– Are they worn smooth?
– Do they move freely?
– Are they at least 3/16th of an inch long?

• Check the commutator

– Does the copper look clean and smooth?

Slide the brush caps towards the rear of the New brushes are approximately 3/4th of a inch
