Two-dimensional Shapes (2D)

• These shapes are flat and
can only be drawn on
paper.
• They have two dimensions
– length and width.
• They are sometimes called
plane shapes.

Transformations
We will be looking at the four different types of
transformations across Year 9.

Transformations are when we change a shape, the

object, by translating, reflecting, rotating or
enlarging.

For each type of transformation you need to give

different information.

Translation

In Geometry, “Translation” simply means

moving……….

……….without rotating, resizing or anything else,

just moving.

To translate a shape:

Every point of the shape must move:

• the same distance
• In the same direction

ongruent Shapes

Congruency
If one shape can become another using translations,
reflections or rotations, then the shapes are congruent.

After any of these transformations the shape

still has the same size, area, angles and line
lengths.
derstand transformation is a way of changing a shape and weather the shape is similar,
ngruent or neither.

Congruent or Similar?

The two shapes need to be the same size to be congruent.

When we need to resize one shape to make it the

same as the other, the shapes are similar.
