Energy &

Electricity

How is
Electricity
Created?
• One way of generating electricity is
by the spinning of a turbine called
the generator.
• In a windmill, the spinning of the
generator with an electric coil
around magnets results in a flow of
electrons through the coil; this is
called "magnetic induction".
What is
lightning?
• Lightning is energy that is
formed in the clouds. When a
storm is formed wind whips the
clouds, it sometimes forces
either negative or positive
particles out of the cloud. When
this happens the negative or
positive particles reach down
while it's opposite (positive –
negative, negative – positive)
comes up to meet it. The reason
this happens is that opposites
attract, like the north and south
poles of a magnet.
Renewable Energy

• The term "Renewable Energy" is thrown

around a lot, like how it can "Save the Planet".
But how does it work? And how can it save
the planet?! To answer that we need to take a
deeper dive into the different forms of energy
and how one form of energy can be converted
in another form. There are many different
forms of energy, but for this, we just need to
look at the basics: Thermal energy, motion,
light, chemical, wind, and electric. To take one
form of energy and convert is called an energy
converter. But something that takes energy
from a source (like the sun) and converts it to
another form of energy is a source converter (I
know, not that much of a difference). One
example of a source converter is a solar panel,
which takes the sun's rays (light energy) and
converts it into electricity.

Renewable
Energy (continued)
• Source converters like Solar Panels or
Dams are better than fossil fuels
because instead of burning coal or oil,
which emit greenhouse gasses (more
on that later) which are bad for the
planet's atmosphere, they use energy
that is quite apparent to us, like wind or
sunlight, to power things. Greenhouse
gas is a type of gas which rips up holes
in the ozone layer (the layer that
protects you from harmful UV rays),
greenhouse gasses are just creating the
effect that happens in a greenhouse: all
the light comes into it, but a larger
portion of the light is generated into
heat and humidity. This is how
Renewable Energy is better.

The world is made up of atoms, they make up
buildings, cities, galaxies, the whole universe, in short!
That includes you! Atoms are microscopic particles
that are the foundation of everything. Atoms are even
related to energy, but to understand that we need to
look at an atom's structure. The inside of an atom is
Atoms quite simple, there are three main components: 1. a
proton, which carries a positive charge, 2. an electron,
which carries a negative charge, 3. a neutron, which is
neutral. There are a few other parts of an atom (like
the shell), and there are different variations of atoms,
like hydrogen and uranium, which have other amounts
of particles (the ones we just learned about), but let's
not worry about that right now.
Atoms (continued)
• The way energy is generated is
when an electron leaves an
atom it creates an imbalance
inside the atom. When an atom
becomes unbalanced, another
atom gives that atom an
electron, it becomes
imbalanced, so on and so forth.
This process happen very
rapidly, and that creates
electricity. That's how an atom
helps generate electricity.
