NETWORKS
NETWORKS
 A network is two or more computers (or other electronic devices) that are connected
together, usually by cables or Wi-Fi. Some computer networks will have a server . A server is
a powerful computer that often acts as a central hub for services in a network, eg emails,
internet access and file storage.

 A computer network is a set of computers sharing resources located on or provided by network

nodes. The computers use common communication protocols over digital interconnections to
communicate with each other
TYPES OF NETWORKS
 PERSONAL AREA NETWORK (PAN) This is the smallest and most basic network that you'll find. ...
 LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN) ...
 WIRELESS LOCAL AREA NETWORK (WLAN) ...
 METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK (MAN) ...
 WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN) ...
 STORAGE AREA NETWORK (SAN) ...
 VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK (VPN)
 Hubs
 Swicthes
 Routers
TYPES EXPLAINED
BY DEON
 A hub is a hardware device that connects multiple computers together in a network and
allows them to share data packets. Each computer will be connected to a single 'port' on the
hub. So if you purchase an '8 port hub', you will be able to connect up to eight computers
together.
 A switch is a component which is used within a computer network. A switch has a number
of ports and it stores the addresses of all network devices that are directly or indirectly
connected to it on each port.

 A wireless router connects directly to a modem by a cable. This allows it to receive

information from — and transmit information to — the internet. The router then creates and
communicates with your home Wi-Fi network using built-in antennas. As a result, all of the
devices on your home network have internet access.
OVERVIEW OF IP ADDRESS
AND MAC ADDRESS
 The main difference between MAC and IP address is that MAC Address is used to ensure
the physical address of the computer. It uniquely identifies the devices on a network. While
IP addresses are used to uniquely identifies the connection of the network with that device
takes part in a network.
 MAC Address stands for Media Access Control Address. ... MAC Address ensure that physical
address of the computer is unique. IP Address is a logical address of the computer and is
used to uniquely locate computer connected via a network
 The IP address is used to transport data from one network to another network using the
TCP/IP protocol. The MAC address is used to deliver the data to the right device on a
network.
WIFI AND BLUTOOTH
 Both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are used for providing wireless communication through radio
signals. The most distinction between Bluetooth and Wifi is that, Bluetooth is actually
accustomed connect short-range devices for sharing information whereas Wifi is used for
providing high-speed web access or internet.
HOW TO SET UP AND
CONFIGURE SMALL
NETWORKS
 Connect your router to the Internet
 Click Start.
 Click Control Panel.
 Click Network and Internet.
 Click Network and Sharing Center.
 Click Set up a connection or network.
 Click Connect to the Internet.
 Follow the instructions in the wizard.
OVERVIEW OF INTRANETS AND EXTRANETS

 An intranet is a network where employees can create content, communicate, collaborate,
get stuff done, and develop the company culture. An extranet is similar to an intranet, but
also provides controlled access to authorized customers, vendors, partners, or others outside
the company.
EXPLANATION OF LAN AND
WLAN
 WLAN stands for Wireless Local Area Network. LAN connections include both wired and
wireless connections. WLAN connections are completely wireless. LAN network is a
collection of computers or other such network devices in a particular location that are
connected together by communication elements or network elements.
EXPLANATION OF OF WAN
 A wide area network is a telecommunications network that extends over a large geographic
area for the primary purpose of computer networking. Wide area networks are often
established with leased telecommunication circuits.
EXPLANATION OF NETWORK
SECURITY
 Network Security protects your network and data from breaches, intrusions and other
threats. This is a vast and overarching term that describes hardware and software solutions as
well as processes or rules and configurations relating to network use, accessibility, and overall
threat protection.
VIRUSES
 A computer virus is a malicious piece of computer code designed to spread from device to
device. A subset of malware, these self-copying threats are usually designed to damage a
device or steal data. Think of a biological virus – the kind that makes you sick
.
VIRUSES
 The strictest definition of a "network virus" describes a relatively new type of malware that
spreads from computer to computer without having to drop a file-based copy of itself in any
of the affected computers. These viruses exist only as network packets, when they move from
one computer to another, and in memory.
EXPLAIN VIDEO AND WEB
CONFERENCING
 With web conferencing, one person presents on a topic to a any number of participants. They
might take questions as they go, but it isn't a collaborative session. Video conferencing is
better for generative conversations, with teammates exchanging ideas face to face in real time.
 Video conferencing is an online technology that allows users in different locations to hold
face-to-face meetings without having to move to a single location together. ... Uses for video
conferencing include holding routine meetings, negotiating business deals, and interviewing
job candidates.
