B. Demography of Aging and Implication for
Health and Nursing Care

• Prior to 1950, the male population outnumbered the female population. In 1950, this
trend reversed. Currently, women tend to live longer than men.

• The global level, in 2015-2020, women’s life expectancy at birth exceeds that of men by
4.8 years.

• In 2050, the proportion of women among the total population aged 80 years or over is
projected to slightly decline to 59 per cent from 61 per cent in 2019.
C. Family Caregiving Roles and Impacts

• Family caregiving is more intensive, complex, and long lasting than


in the past. Caregivers' roles are highly variable across the course of
caregiving. The domains of the caregiving role include: assistance
with household tasks, self-care tasks, and mobility.
