1. What is a population pyramid?


Population pyramid is a graphical representation of the age, sex composition of a population.

2. What is represented on the x- axis and y axis of the population pyramid?


a. The horizontal axis (x-axis) shows the percentage of males and females in each age group. It
also shows the number of people in each age - sex group.
b. The vertical axis (y-axis) shows the population which is divided into age groups in interval of five.

3. What does the top of the population pyramid reflect?


The top of the pyramid reflects the number of aged people and the life expectancy. ( population
that are elderly and shrinking)

1. Why are human resources important for the growth of a country?
a. Human resources use their intelligence, skill, and technology to transform the natural
resources into valuable products.
b. They are the ones who make efficient use of resources through proper management and their
utilization.

2. Define Population Density. How can we calculate the population density of India?
a. Population density is the number of people living in a unit area of the earth’s surface which is
expressed as per square km.
b. To calculate the population density of India we need to divide the total population of India by
the total area of India.

3. Why are mineral based regions and river valleys densely populated?
a. Both mineral based regions and river valleys are densely populated as all three types of
economic activities are practiced by the people here.
b. Rivers cater fresh water to the people residing in the river valleys for various purposes.
c. Extraction of minerals from mining regions and the other related industries provide
employment opportunities to the people.

4. Define Census. Mention any two reasons for its importance.


a. Census is the process of taking a count of the total number of people in a country after every
ten years. It is important for the economy as it provides the ratio of male and the female in the
total population of the country.
b. It enables the government to plan and formulate various policies for its people and also
predict other issues.

5. What is population explosion?


Population explosion is the phenomenon when there is a sudden rise in the number of
population in a particular country or region due to rapid increase in the natural growth rate.

6. Define demography.
Demography is the study of human population with respect to their size, their structure and
their development.

7. What is Natural Growth Rate?


The difference between the birth rate and the death rate of a country is known as natural
growth rate of a country.

8. Define population change.


The population change refers to change in the number of people during a specific time.

a. What is the main reason behind the population not being stable?
This is due to changes in the number of births and deaths.

b. Why until the 1800s, the world’s population grew steadily but slowly?
A large numbers of babies were born, but they died in their infancy. This was due
to lack
of proper health facilities. Sufficient food was not available for all the people.
Farmers were not able to produce enough to meet the food requirements of
all the people. As a result, the total increase in population was very low.
