A. FUNGTION

Propeller shaft is made in such a way that can move power from the


transmission tothe differential with soft without being affected by recent
changes to the transmissionof differential position in accordance with the road
surface and vehicle load.

For this purpose a universal joint mounted on each end of the propeller shaft, its
function to absorb the change in angle of the suspension.
In addition Yoke sleeve banded together to absorb the changes between the
transmission and differential

B. CONSTRUCTION

Propeller shaft tubes are made of steel pipe having resistance
to twisting or bendingforce.

Balance Weight mounted on the outside of the pipe aim for a balance at the time


ofspinning. Generally consists of a propeller
shaft having two connecting pipesattached to both ends of the universal form
of joint.

C. UNIVERSAL JOINT
Universal Joint reduce propeller shaft angle changes due to work to soften the
suspension system and shift power from the transmission to the differential

There are many types of Universal joint:


1.Hooke’s Joint
a.Solid bearing cup (dapat dibongkar)
b.Shell bearing cup (tidak dapat dibongkar)

The figure below shows the change
in speed of driven shaft B, which
forms an angle of 30 ° in relation to
the drive shaft A, when
the drive shaft rotates at a constant
speed. When the drive shaft A

The variation of angular velocity can be overcome by placing the universal joint on
thedrive end (transmission) and driven end (differential) in Hooke's joint. In addition
tothe drive shaft and the driven shaft is positioned parallel to prevent the rotation
speedand torque variations

2. Flexible Joint

Flexible joint consists of a hard rubber coupling that is
placed between two three-foot-shaped yoke. During the flexible
joint friction will not produce without the need for softrotating lubrication

3. Constant Velocity Joint

Constant velocity joint has the advantage of moving round and softer moments, and had


a complete loss of expensive because of its design. Therefore rarely
used forconnecting the propeller shaft, but more often used on the front drive
shaft from the vehicle front-wheel drive or rear drive shaft from the vehicle
with independent rear suspension.

Constant velocity joint is divided into two types:

4. Center Bearing

Center bearing consists of a rubber bushing which protects
the bearing which themotion to hold the propeller shaft.

Rubber bushings also serve to prevent vibration reaching the
vehicle body. And the result of vibration or noise from the propeller
shaft at high speed can be reduced to a minimum.
