minutes each day to read.
Set reading goals

2
You can set your own reading goals to help you
develop a wider vocabulary, gain a deeper
understanding of different texts and improve
your ability to make connections between
things you read and your own perspectives and
ideas.
Preview the texts you read

3 You can apply this strategy by previewing titles,

captions, headlines and other text features to
get an idea of what you are reading about.
Determine the purpose

4 Think about why various texts were written and

what meanings or themes can be understood
from a text.
Apply key reading strategies

5 As you read different texts, you can apply

several key strategies to help you increase your
comprehension.
Take notes while you read

questions about and make connections to what
you read.
Apply what you read by
summarizing

7 Summarizing forces you to remember specific

details and central topics about what you read
in your own words and through your own
unique perspective.
Let’s practice!

Read the following text and find:

1. Topic
2. Main idea
3. 10 difficult vocabularies and their meaning
4. Summarize the text
Atmosphere of Venus
Data from the Pioneer spacecraft of NASA apparently prove the theory that the
high surface temperature of Venus is due to an atmospheric greenhouse effect
caused mainly by a blanket of carbon dioxide. Such a greenhouse effect is
created when energy in the form of sunlight easily passes through a planet’s
atmosphere, warms its surface, and is converted to heat radiation that is then
held in by the atmosphere from top to bottom. Venus has a relatively thin
atmosphere like the Earth’s, but Venus’ atmosphere consists of more than ninety
percent carbon dioxide, compared to less than four percent in that of the Earth.
Because of its higher percentage of carbon dioxide, Venus’ atmosphere traps
much more heat radiation than does the Earth’s. Thus, the Venus studies are
believed to be important to the understanding of possible adverse effects on the
Earth’s agriculture that could result from the long-term use of fossil fuels, which
add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
