Vehicle Dynamics
Study of vehicle dynamics which plays a vital role in finding out the right balance
between driver feel, comfort and safety of passengers and the factor which we all
experience during driving.

Vehicle dynamics dealing with automobile vehicles consists of sub divisions :

1. Steering system
2. Suspension system
3. Chassis
4. Transmission system
5. Braking system
Steering System
The function of a steering system is to convert the rotary movement of the steering
wheel in driver’s hand into angular turn of the front wheels on road.
Types of steering systems:

Mechanical system

1. Rack and pinion mechanism

2. Recirculating ball mechanism
3. Bell Crank Mechanism

Electric System

4. Electric powered hydraulic system

5. Fully Electric system
Types of steering Geometry :
Applications of various mechanisms :
Suspension System :
The suspension system’s primary function is to maximize the overall performance
of a vehicle as it cruises down the road. The suspension system also helps to
absorb bumps in the road and provide a safe and comfortable ride.

Types of suspension system :

1. Wishbone or Parallel link type. 6. Rigid axle suspension

2. Vertical guide type 7. Leaf Spring
3. Trailing link type 8.Air Suspension
4. Macpherson strut type
5. Swing half axle type.
Anti Dive :

Anti Squat :
Chassis
The chassis provides the strength needed for supporting the different vehicular
components as well as the payload and helps to keep the automobile rigid and
stiff. Consequently, the chassis is also an important component of the overall
safety system.
Types of chassis :

1. Ladder Chassis
2. Space Frame
3. Backbone Chassis
4. Tub Chassis
5. Monocoque
6. Body on Frame
Chassis considerations :

● Designing a perfect suspension for the application after the chassis could cause
construction to be impossible or unable to meet the specifications.
● Rules for chassis safety provide the best starting point to develop a vehicle.
Aerodynamics will likely determine the overall shape and area that can be used in
design.

In order to achieve a satisfactory structure, the following must be selected:

● The most appropriate structural type for the intended application

● The correct layout of structural elements to ensure satisfactory load paths
● Appropriate sizing of panels and sections, and good detail design of joints.
Transmission System
The mechanism that transmits the power developed by the engine of automobile
to the engine to the driving wheels is called the transmission system.
● Transmitting one mode of motion to another
● Transmitting one motion direction to another
● Transmitting power from one part to another
Types of transmission systems :

1. Manual Transmission
2. Automatic Transmission
3. Automated Manual Transmission
4. Continously variable Transmission
Components of transmission system
● Clutch
● Gear Box
● Transfer Case
● Propeller Shaft
● Universal Joints.
● Final Drive
● Differential
● Torque Tube
● Road Wheel
Braking system :
The function of vehicle brake system is to stop or slow down the moving
motor vehicle or prevent it from moving when in stationary position. All the braking
systems use the force of friction for their operation.

Types :

1. Disc Brakes
2. Drum Brakes

Actuating Mechanisms

3. Hydraulic
4. Pneumatic
5. Mechanical
