Formerly known as Madras Port
The third oldest port .
Artificial Harbour.
The Port now with three docks, 24 berths.
HISTORY
Maritime trade started way back in 1639 on the sea shore of
Chennai
Artificial Harbour was build and the operations were
started in 1881.
In 1920 the port was equipped with a dock of four berth in
the West Quays.
In 1983, Country’s first dedicated container terminal of 380
mt. Length facility was commissioned by Former Prime
Minister Late. Smt. Indira Gandhi

Total Quay Length of around 2.3 km.


12 berths which cater to passengers, general cargo, fertilizers
and other cargoes
One Berth dedicated to naval vessel.
The draft in the dock varies from minimum of 8.5 m for
passenger berth to a maximum of 12 m for general/ore
berths.
The entrance channel is 125 m wide
Bharathi Dock

 Total Quay Length around 1.9 km with around 380 m for


handeling iron ore, 885 m for container and rest for POL.
 It has 3 berth which generally carter to oil and iron ores.
 Iron ore berth can handel Post-Panamax Ships having a draft
upto 16.5 m
 Two POL berth have draft of 14.6 to 16.5 m.
 These are the deepest berth at the port.
JAWAHAR DOCK
 It has a Quay length of around 1.3 km.
 Has 6 berth which generally carter to food grains, coal and other
ores.
 It is a closed deck with basin dimensions of 655m X 152 m.
 The draft in the dock varies from minimum of 10.4 m to 11.0 m.

• Maritime transport is essential to world economy.

• Total of 52.000 merchant vessels out of which 11,000 bulk carrier vessels.

• India has 12 Major Ports and 200 minor Ports.


New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT)
The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) is one of the 12 Major Port Trusts in
India. The Port is functioning under the Major Port Trust Act 1963 under the
Administrative Control of Ministry of Shipping, Go.. of India. The Port is
following Mercantile System of Accounting and complies with the various
Accounting Standards issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India
from time to time.

beginning of handling less
than a lakh tonnes of traffic
to the present level of
handling 39.15 million
tonnes during the last
financial year 2019-20.

1-At Present 3 shore harbour mobile cranes are
available at Mangalore Port for loading and
unloading of all general cargo vessels.
Out of 3 cranes, 2 cranes are owned by Port and 1
crane is owned by private party.
Green Port Initiative

• 33% of the Total port area maintained as greenbelt.


• 350 KW Roof Top Solar Power Plant Commissioned in April, 2016.
• Installation of 4 MW Solar Power Plant completed on 5-12-2016
• Installation of 850 KW Roof Top solar Plant on warehouses to be completed
in 2017
• A new Park of 1.85 acres developed
on the bank of River Gurpur for
general public— Rs. 55 lakhs.
