INTRODUCTION :Types of RCC beams
1. Based on shape of beam: rectangular, circular, trapezoidal beams and beams
with varying depth etc.
2.Based on reinforcement quality provided:
• Balanced section: where steel provided is equal to balanced steel requirement.
So both concrete failure and steel yielding happens at the same time. The
percentage of steel corresponding to this section is called as balanced steel and
the neutral axis is called as critical neutral axis.

• Under reinforcement beams: where provided reinforcement is less than

balanced steel. So steel yields first and gives a huge deflection before failure.
It is to be provided as per IS code

INTRODUCTION :Types of RCC beams
• Over reinforced section: when provided steel is higher than balanced steel. Since
steel provided is high, concrete fails first giving a brittle and sudden collapse of
member.

INTRODUCTION: Types of RCC beams
1.Based on location of steel provided:
1. Singly reinforced: where steel is provided only on tension side
2. Doubly reinforced: where steel is provided both on compression and tension

SINGLY REINFORCED BEAMS:

SINGLY REINFORCED BEAMS:
Maximum depth of neutral axis:
• A compression failure is brittle failure.
• The maximum depth of neutral axis is limited to ensure that tensile steel will
reach its yield stress before concrete fails in compression, thus a brittle failure is
avoided.
• The limiting values of the depth of neutral axis for different grades of steel from
strain diagram.

SINGLY REINFORCED BEAMS:
Limiting value of tension steel and moment of resistance

Since the maximum depth of neutral axis is limited, the maximum value of moment
of resistance is also limited.
• M lim with respect to concrete = C*z = 0.36 fck b xu,max (d – 0.42 xu,max)
• M lim with respect to steel = T*z= 0.87 fy Ast (d – 0.42 xu,max)

DOUBLY REINFORCED BEAMS:
• Concrete is good in compression whereas poor in tension, so the reinforcements are
provided in the tension zone of the beam so that the tensile stresses are taken up by
the steel.
The cross section of the beam is decided by keeping the Length(L)/Depth(d) ratio in
mind as which will be sufficient to take up the compressive and tensile stresses
without failing.

DOUBLY REINFORCED BEAMS:
• When the moment due to loads is less than the Resisting Moment, then it is OK to
make the beam as a Singly Reinforced Beam, i.e, the reinforcements are only to
be provided in the tension zone.
But when the Bending Moment due to loads exceeds the Resisting moment, then
we need to provide the Reinforcements in the compression zone too. This is a
Doubly Reinforced Beam.
The use of Doubly Reinforced Beam can be done where there is restriction in the
provision of sufficient depth of the beam to make it as a singly reinforced one.
