TESTIMONIALS FROM YMCA KL
The 3rd KL Boys’ Brigade (3rdKLBB) Company was founded in 1957 and now evolved in rich tradition and proud heritage of
boys who grew into compelling gentlemen and leaders.

DOUGLAS TAN
Junior BB Boy . YMCA KL Junior Member

“My name is Douglas Tan. I joined The Boy’s Brigade for 6 years now, since 2014 when my
parents’ friends introduced me to it. When I first joined the Boy’s Brigade, I was too shy to make
friends but after a few months, i gradually became braver and made more friends. I literally did
not know what to expect at my first camp but after several camps I learned how to cook, set up
tent, and picked up many other useful skills! I discovered in my six(6) years with 3rdKLBB that my
favourite activity is Foot Drill (marching) because I like challenges with goals and I feel rewarded
with a sense of accomplishment when we complete the drill. I want to be a good leader in the
Boys’ Brigade which everyone loves to communicate with. I also hope to achieve many leadership
promotions and badges in the future, including the President’s Badge (the BB’s second highest
award)“

TESTIMONIALS FROM YMCA KL
ROSHAN GHARPURAY
Senior BB Boy . YMCA KL Junior Member

“I’ve been with The Boys’ Brigade since 2010 when I was 6 years old. I was at an age where I was
as curious and restless as every 6-year old that joined the BB, but I picked up habits from my
Seniors and Officers that helped mould me to mature faster and sharper than the rest of those
my age. In the Junior Section (ages 10-12) and Senior Section (ages 13-19) my first outdoor camp
experience with other BB companies. Experiencing and surviving the outdoors with my
groupmates helped shape my character and personality. Pesta 2018 my first full week with
friends, competing and enjoying the most chilled camp ever together. I love the BB because of
events like this because there are skills to learn no one would bother teaching for free. It’s a
massive win for anyone still in school to join the BB. However, joining doesn’t mean an immediate
change though because we need to put in effort and commitment to make the change. Being in
the BB has made me a better person by handling situations calmly and not to overreact knowing
problems are problems because they are solvable and there is nothing to stress or worry about.
During school projects, I’ve learned to speak up first and I know how to manage groups of people
much better than before. I’ve acquired soft skills through close to 10 years in the BB that people
pay hundreds to learn. It’s not a baby step that the BB provides but a large adult step into life
after school. Special thanks to 3rd KL BB and the officers that have brought me up to who I am

“I have lived a life of drugs and crime for more than 30 years, jailed for more than seven (7) times.
My life turned for the worst each time I was release from prison. I believed that God placed me in
Kenosis Home so that I could surrender my life to Him and His work. And I am so thankful for the
Kenosis community experience that i never seen or experienced anywhere else in my life. God
has truly changed and blessed me. But he is not done with me yet...work still in progress.”

turn my eyes away from Jesus.”

SPECIAL TESTIMONIAL
Pusat Jagaan ‘Y’ (PJY) provides specialised education for Deaf children from infancy to primary and secondary school.

TAN LAI HENG

Pusat Jagaan ‘Y’ Graduate . YMCA KL Junior Deaf Member

“In 2010, Tan Lai Heng was diagnosed at 3yrs old of bilingual Schinzel Giedion syndrome (SGS).
With hearing impairment and no speech development he was only able to communicate using
Sign Language to his teachers, parent and sibling. He requires physiotherapy to correct his
walking due to a problem with his back bone. He had initially stopped the sessions as the family
could not afford it on their own with irregular income. He was a slow learner and development in
understanding the vocabulary but since joining the Pusat Majudiri ‘Y’ Child Development
Program, he had improved tremendously. His understanding of vocabulary, signing and
conversation were understood amongst his friends, classmate and teachers using Sign Language.
After he was sponsored through the Pusat Jagaan ‘Y’ Tan Lai Heng slowly showed himself as a
smart student and was always curious to learn. Since 2010 till now, we were happy that he has
improved tremendously in all subject with encouragement from teachers at our center and
friends and parent. He participated and enjoyed all the activities and program like outing, camping
provided by the Pusat Jagaan ‘Y’ and attended events where Pusat Jagaan ‘Y’ were invited to in
corporate companies even though he has difficulty in walking and eating well. He is today, a
happy and joyous boy always making jokes with the YMCA KL Staff and his friends.”
