THE CORRELATION AMONG READING
INTEREST, READING SKILL, AND CRITICAL
THINKING SKILL OF UNDERGRADUATE
STUDENTS OF TRIDINANTI UNIVERSITY
PALEMBANG

Background of Study
• Reading is important skill in higher education, since it is a key to academic success for all students
(Tavakoli, 2014)

• College Students is expected to academically engaged with reading academic, because they will be
faced so many types of academic reading in their courses.

• However a students read for many purposes, they will have different method different text being
read. A reader may not use the same method when he reads science books and novel. If it measured

by the time, it can be guessed that a reader will read novel faster than science books. It is, of course
because he has something which makes him reading novel faster than science books. Something tha
t
a reader has to support his reading is what known by interest.

• Interest is defined as interaction between a person and an object within the environment (Khaled, 20
13). In other words, there is something happened which made a person and an object interrelated
Background of Study
• Besides reading skills, students in higher education are expected to have critical thinking.

• The education leaders agree if some elements of the ability to think critically are also included in the
elements of the ability to read well. Those elements are evaluation, analysis, making inferences
thinking inductive and deductive reasoning (Hawkins, 2012).

• The writer assumes that if students intends to have critical thinking they must have good reading
skills, and of course it must be realized if students have an interest in reading.

• In relation to the arguments states above, the writer aims to do the research with title “The Correlation
Among Reading Interest, Reading Skill and Critical Thinking of Undergraduate Students of Tridinanti
University Palembang”.
Problems of Study
1. Is there any significant correlation between reading interest and critical thinking skill of undergraduate
students of Tridinanti university?
2. Is there any significant correlation between reading skill and critical thinking skill of undergraduate
students of Tridinanti university?

3. Is there any significant correlation among reading interest, reading skill and critical thinking skill of
undergraduate students of Tridinanti university?
4. How much does reading interest contribute to critical thinking skill of undergraduate students of
Tridinanti university?

5. How much does reading skill contribute to critical thinking skill of undergraduate students of Tridinanti
university?
The Objectives of Study
1. To find out whether or not there is a significant correlation between reading interest
and critical thinking skill of undergraduate students of Tridinanti university.
2. To find out whether or not there is a significant correlation between reading skill and
critical thinking skill of undergraduate students of Tridinanti university.

3. To find out whether or not there is a significant correlation among reading

interest, reading skill and critical thinking skill of undergraduate students of Tridinanti
university.

4. To find out in what extent that reading interest contributes toward students’ critical
thinking skill of undergraduate students of Tridinanti university.
5. To find out in what extent that reading skill contributes toward critical thinking skills
of undergraduate students of Tridinanti university.
Research Methodology
1. In this study, the writer intends to know the relationship among reading interest,
reading skill and critical thinking skill.
2. A quantitative research will be the approach in conducting this study

3. Correlation research design will be used as the research design.

4. The purpose of correlation research is to find out the relationship between v
ariables or to use relationship in making predictions (Wallen & Fraenkel, 2012)
5. There are two kinds of variables in this study, the independent variable and
dependent variable

6. In this study, the independent variables are the reading interest (X1) and reading

skill (X2), while the dependent variable is critical thinking skill (Y)
The Association of The Independent Variables and Dependent Variable of This Study is
Portrayed in Figure 1.

Population and Sample
1. Population refers to large group. In this research the population will be all undergraduate
students of Tridinanti University. It consists of 77 students.
2. In this study, total sampling is a sampling technique where the number of samples is th
e same as the population (Sugiyono , 2007).
Technique for Collecting Data
1. Reading Interest Questinnaire : To gather the data dealing with students’ reading interest, a ready
-made questionnaire adopted from Fajri (2015) is administered. This questionnaire consists of 20
items and uses a five-likert scale,ranging from 5 (always), 4 (often), 3 ( sometimes), 2 (seldom),
and 1 (never)
2. Reading skill refers to students ability in grasping and constructing the meaning from the
information found in the texts that will be measured by using a reading comprehension test
which adapted from Linda and Loise (1981).

3. Students’ critical thinking skill will be measured by administering a ready-made test from
American College Testing (2009), Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) Critical
Thinking test. This test consists of 32 items of multiple choice, measuring the skills of analyzing,
evaluating, and extending (creating) arguments.
Technique for Analyzing the Data

1. Normality Test
2. Correlational Analysis
3. Regression Analysis
