[§206.5 & 404] Doors, Doorways
and Gates
REQUIREMENTS:
- Closing speed (if any)
 Closer: the time to move the door from 90⁰ to
12⁰ from the latch is 5 sec minimum
 Spring Hinge: the time to close the door from
70⁰ is 1.5 sec minimum
- Opening force: maximum 5 lbf
- Side lights (if any) accessible viewing height 43” max
- Hardware: operable parts must comply with ADA
standard
- Smooth surface: required at the bottom on the push
size
- Thresholds: ½ max high
- Maneuvering clearance: required on both sides
[§404.2.3] Clear Width
The clear width is measured from the stop to the face of doors or gates open 90⁰ (or to the leading edge of sliding or folding doors).

Clear width of Doorways:

should be 32 in minimum
[§404.2.4] Maneuvering Clearances

Clearance required at both sides of the doors, doorways, and gates provide the unobstructed space for maneuvering through
doorways

The maneuvering space must be free of protrusion in full height (80 in minimum) and changes in level (threshold is acceptable)
[§404.2.4] Maneuvering Clearances at Manual Swinging Doors
(a) Front approach, pull side: the perpendicular dimension of the clearance to the doorway is at least 60 in. The parallel
dimension is at least 18 in from the latch

(b) Front approach, push side: the perpendicular dimension of the clearance to the doorway is at least 48 in.

(c) Front approach, push side, closer and latch provided: the perpendicular dimension of the clearance to the doorway is at
least 48 in. The parallel dimension is at least 12 in from the latch
[§404.2.4] Maneuvering Clearances at Manual Swinging Doors
d) Hinge approach, pull side: the perpendicular dimension of the clearance to the doorway is at least 60 in. The parallel
dimension is at least 36 in from the latch

e) Hinge approach, pull side: the perpendicular dimension of the clearance to the doorway is at least 54 in. The parallel
dimension is at least 42 in from the latch

f) Hinge approach, push side: the perpendicular dimension of the clearance to the doorway is at least 42 in. The parallel
dimension is at least 22 in from the hinge
[§404.2.4] Maneuvering Clearances at Manual Swinging Doors
g) Hinge approach, push side, closer and latch provided: the perpendicular
dimension of the clearance to the doorway is at least 48 in. The parallel dimension
is at least 22 in from the hinge

h) Latch approach, pull side: the perpendicular dimension of the clearance to the
doorway is at least 48in. The parallel dimension is at least 24 in from the latch

i) Latch approach, pull side, closer and latch provided : the perpendicular dimension
of the clearance to the doorway is at least 54 in. The parallel dimension is at least
24 in from the latch
[§404.2.4] Maneuvering Clearances at Manual Swinging Doors
j) Latch approach, push side: the perpendicular dimension of the clearance to the doorway is at least 42 in. The parallel
dimension is at least 24 in from the latch

k) Latch approach, push side, closer and latch provided : the perpendicular dimension of the clearance to the doorway is at
least 48 in. The parallel dimension is at least 24 in from the latch
[§404.2.4] Maneuvering Clearances at Manual Swinging Doors

Type of Use Minimum Maneuvering Clearance

to Doorway (beyond the latch)
a From front Pull 60 in (1525 mm) 18 in (455 mm)
b From front Push 48 in (1220 mm) No specific require
c From front Push, closer & latch provided 48 in (1220 mm) 12 in (305 mm)

[§404.2.4] Maneuvering Clearances at Doorway without
Doors, Manual Sliding Doors
(a) Front approach: the perpendicular dimension of the clearance to the doorway is at least 48 in.

(b) Side approach: the perpendicular dimension of the clearance to the doorway is at least 42 in.
[§404.2.4] Maneuvering Clearances at Doorway without
Doors, Manual Sliding Doors
c) From pocket/ hinge side approach: the perpendicular dimension of the clearance to the doorway is at least 42 in. The parallel
dimension should be at least 22 in beyond the hinge

d) From stop/ latch side: the perpendicular dimension of the clearance to the doorway is at least 42 in. The parallel dimension
should be at least 24 in beyond the latch
[§404.2.6] Doors and Gates in Series

Clearance require at least 48 in plus the width of

doors swinging into the space.

(a) The door in right hand opening to the space

so the distance should be at least 48 in plus
the width of the right hand

(b) Two doors are not swinging to the space so

the distance should be at least 48 in

(c) Two doors are swinging to the space so the

distance should be at least 48 in plus the
width of the two doors
[§404.2.7] Door and Gate Hardware

REQUIREMENTS:

- Allow one-hand operation

- not require tight grasping (nắm chặt), pinching, or twisting of the wrist (xoay, vặn cổ tay)
- operate with 5 lbf maximum
- be located 34” to 48” above the floor.
Definition
1) Doorway: an opening into a building or a room, where the door is

2) Door Closer: any mechanical device that closes a door in a controlled manner. Spring Hinge is self-closing hinge.

3) Threshold: a strip of wood, metal, or stone forming the bottom of a doorway

4) Maneuvering clearance: is the area around a manually-operated door that is required to be kept clear of obstructions, in
order to allow a person using a wheelchair or crutches sufficient space to maneuver when opening the door
