Exercise 01 – Vocabulary (lead-in)
When you look at these pictures, what type of
houses do you see?
◦ Would you like to live in either one of these houses? Why/ Why not?
◦ What would be your ideal home and why?
◦ Work in pairs and tell each other about your dream house. Try to use the vocabulary from exercise 01 (from the book)(5 mins)

◦ Note: Man-made : Buildings, lakes, beaches, what else can be man-made? The title of this Unit is the Man-Made environment.
It is a really popular topic in the exam.
When you are reading a text, do you apply any
strategies?
◦ Do you think these strategies would help us in the exam?
◦ Scanning: Check the article on page 13, how many paragraphs does it have?
Example: X-Ray check up, looking up a word in a dictionary
◦ Skimming: In unit 4, which page has an article on travelling?
Example: we use skimming in our daily life to decide on if we want to read that specific book or not.
◦ Skimming the text
• read the title, the introduction, any headings and subheadings, and the conclusion.
• read the first sentence of each paragraph (the topic sentence)
• read the concluding sentence of each paragraph.
• read the words highlighted in bold.
• look at illustrations (pictures, diagrams, tables).
Exercise 4
◦ Look at the photograph of a home, which cost more than one billion dollars to build. Discuss what you like/dislike about the
design.
Exercise 5
◦ Now skim the text to understand the main ideas. You have a time limit of 8 mins. Please do not look up new words in a
dictionary.

◦ Tip: You are only reading for the main ideas. So remember to ignore unknown words.
Exercise 6
◦ Answer the questions on your own.
Exercise 7
◦ Now you are going to scan the text for information.
◦ Tip: in many of the IELTS reading tasks the answers appear in the same order as the text.

Where in the text is the answer to Exercise 07, question 1? (beginning) 3? (middle) 6? (end).
Complete the exercise. You have 5 mins.
Paraphrasing?
Exercise 8
◦ Paraphrasing is to repeat something using different words, often in a shortened form, which makes the
meaning clearer.
Tip: It is useful in the IELTS reading exam because many of the questions paraphrase what is written in
the text. It is important therefore that candidates understand the concept of paraphrasing

- Match the paraphrases with the paragraphs from the text. 8 mins.
◦ Little = small
S___________:
words or phrases that have the same or nearly the same meaning as another word or phrase in the same language.

Why are they important for ielts exam??

Antonym x synonym
◦ Tip: Synonyms are useful in the IELTS Reading exam because questions rarely use the same words as in the text, this would
be too easy. Instead questions often feature synonyms of words from the text. It is important therefore, that students focus on
synonyms when they are learning new vocabulary.
